GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:05 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium (Waldorf, Md.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (9-3, 49-33) return to Waldorf, Md. to face the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (5-9, 31-52) in the opener of a three-game series. The Ducks’ past road trip, from July 4-10, wrapped up in Maryland, with the Ducks taking three of four games from the Blue Crabs. Long Island owns an 11-3 record versus Southern Maryland, out-hitting its opponent in team batting average, .306 to .246, in those 14 games.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT:  Tyler Colvin’s two-out, ninth-inning grand slam lifted Long Island to an 8-4 win over Bridgeport in the finale of a three-game series.

The Bluefish scored two runs in the top of the second inning on solo home runs from Jose Cuevas and Jose Gil. Long Island quickly tied the game, in the bottom of the frame, on Mike Blanke’s two-run single. Delta Cleary Jr.’s sacrifice fly in the third gave the Ducks a 3-2 advantage, and Mark Minicozzi’s RBI infield single in the fifth pushed the lead to 4-2.

The Bluefish stormed back in the final two frames to tie the ballgame. In the eighth, Adron Chambers’ RBI single made it 4-3, and a passed ball that scored Jonathan Galvez made it 4-4. However, with the bases loaded in the ninth, Colvin smashed a first-pitch home run over the right field wall to win the game.

Neither starter factored into the decision. Long Island’s John Brownell struck out six in seven and one-third innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Mike Antonini tossed five and two-third innings of five-hit ball, yielding four runs, striking out seven and walking four. Todd Coffey (2-4) notched the victory, despite allowing on unearned run on two hits in one inning. Jose Veras (2-2) took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning.

ON THE MOUND: Darin Downs looks to avenge the lone loss from his past five starts. On July 9 against the Blue Crabs, Downs was the tough-luck loser, allowing two runs on five hits in Long Island’s 2-0 loss. The left-hander struck out five without walking anyone. Over the former big-leaguers past four, he is 3-1 with a microscopic 1.55 ERA. In 29 innings, the Florida native has 29 strikeouts and no walks. Downs leads the Atlantic League with 102 strikeouts, holding an eight-strikeout lead over Bryan Evans of Lancaster. With a victory in tonight’s game, Downs can tie Bridgeport’s Jonathan Albaladejo for the league lead with eight.

Gaby Hernandez toes the rubber for Southern Maryland. Despite the Miami native’s 1-6 overall record, and 4.20 ERA, he’s pitched effectively against the Ducks. In two starts, Hernandez has a 1.50 earned run average. Spanning 12 innings on the bump against the Flock, he’s struck out 16 and walked two, while allowing two runs on eight hits. The Ducks are hitting just .186 against the 30-year-old, but have won both games opposing Southern Maryland in games Hernandez starts.
