GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (8-3, 48-33) and Bridgeport Bluefish (8-5, 38-45) play the rubber match of a three-game series. The Ducks won on 5-1 on Tuesday, before falling 3-2 on Wednesday. Long Island has posted a 9-3 record against Bridgeport this season, outscoring their opponent 66-36. Since the Ferry Cup’s inception in 2009, the Ducks have won four of seven season series. Tonight marks the 13th of 20 scheduled head-to-heads.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks’ win streak was snapped at five with a 3-2 loss to the Bluefish Wednesday night.

Long Island struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on Delta Cleary Jr.’s RBI single in the first inning. Bridgeport was held scoreless until the sixth when Endy Chavez scored on a throwing error, and Jonathan Galvez drove in a run with a single.

With an RBI double to left field in the seventh, Mike Blanke tied the game at two. However, Bridgeport took its final lead, 3-2, in the ninth on a two-out run-scoring single by Adron Chambers.

Neither starters, Bobby Blevins nor Blake Beavan, factored into the decision, despite pitching well. Blevins surrendered two unearned runs on five hits, striking out four and walking one over six innings. Beavan gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits. In six and two-thirds innings, Bridgeport’s starter struck out five and walked one. Frank DeJiulio Jr. collected the win, tossing a scoreless eighth. Todd Coffey suffered the loss, giving up one run on two hits and a walk in one inning. Former big-leaguer Jose Veras tallied his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.

Both Cody Puckett and Cleary Jr. had two hits, while Ruben Gotay and Fehlandt Lentini scored runs.

ON THE MOUND: John Brownell, a winner of three consecutive starts, takes the hill for Long Island. On July 15 against Somerset, the 33-year-old struck out four over seven innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks. He enters Thursday having made eight straight quality starts dating back to June 5. Over 59.1 innings, Brownell has 55 strikeouts and a 2.28 ERA. His overall earned run average of 2.85 ranks him sixth in the Atlantic League. Brownell beat Bridgeport on May 25, his only start this season against the Bluefish.

The league’s ERA leader, Mike Antonini, takes the hill for Bridgeport. With a 2.61 earned run average, the left-hander faces the Ducks for the fourth time. Over his three head-to-head meetings with Long Island, the Pennsylvania native is 0-1, but has an ERA of 1.06. In 17 innings, he’s allowed two earned runs on 16 hits with 11 strikeouts and five walks. Antonini won his most recent start, July 16 versus Sugar Land, with five innings of four-hit ball, allowing one run.
