Game 81: Ducks vs. Bluefish

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (8-2, 48-32) and Bridgeport Bluefish (7-5, 37-45) battle in the middle game of a three-game set. Tonight marks game 12 of the 2016 Ferry Cup Series, with the Ducks winning nine of the previous 11. Offensively, Anthony Vega leads Long Island in the head-to-head matchup with a .354 batting average, while Dan Lyons has five doubles. The Ducks pitching staff holds a 2.15 ERA against the Bluefish, it’s lowest against any Atlantic League opponent this season.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Long Island won its fifth game in a row, topping Bridgeport 5-1 in the series opener on Tuesday night.

Long Island broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the fifth off Bridgeport’s David Kubiak, plating runs on Delta Cleary’s RBI single and a throwing error. Welington Dotel put Bridgeport on the board in the sixth with a run-scoring single. Cody Puckett put the game out of reach in the seventh. His three-run double to left-center gave the Ducks a 5-1 lead.

Ducks starter Dustin Richardson did not factor into the decision, despite four scoreless innings of one-hit ball. The southpaw struck out four and walked one, throwing 50 pitches in his first Long Island start. Kevin Vance, who tossed two innings of relief, earned the victory, giving up one run on four hits with one strikeout. Kubiak took the loss, yielding two runs (one earned) on five hits, while walking one and striking out six.

Mark Minicozzi, Fehlandt Lentini, and Cleary Jr. collected two hits apiece to lead the Flock.  Eury De La Rosa, Amalio Diaz, and Scott Shuman each tossed scoreless innings to close out the Bluefish.

ON THE MOUND: Fifth-year Duck Bobby Blevins makes his first start since July 5. Against Lancaster 15 days ago, Blevins tossed five innings of four-hit ball, allowing two runs with one strikeout and one walk. The right-hander departed in line for the win, but the Long Island bullpen lost a final-inning lead to the Barnstormers. The Briarcliff native searches for his first victory since April 28, when Blevins beat Southern Maryland at Bethpage Ballpark. He has allowed just six earned runs in his past 14.2 innings, striking out 14.

Blake Beavan takes the hill against the Ducks for the third time in 2016. In his past meeting with Long Island on June 26, the former big-leaguer was out-dueled by Mark Blackmar in a 4-0 Ducks win. Beavan took the tough-luck loss, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts and a walk in six innings. This past Friday, July 15, Beavan surrendered two runs on eight hits, striking out six and walking one in seven strong innings against Sugar Land. Despite a 3-2 Bridgeport win, Beavan did not get a decision.
