Game 76: Ducks at Blue Crabs
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 2:05 p.m. Regency Furniture Stadium (Waldorf, Md.).
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (3-2, 43-32) wrap up a four-game set with the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (1-5, 27-48). The Ducks have beaten the Blue Crabs 10 times in 13 games this season, outscoring Southern Maryland 79-42. Sunday marks the final game before the all-star break from Monday, July 11 to Thursday, July 14. Long Island has won six of eight games in July.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Southern Maryland’s Brian Burres out-dueled Long Island’s Darin Downs as the Blue Crabs topped the Ducks 2-0.
The game was scoreless for three-and-a-half innings until Southern Maryland broke the tie. In the bottom of the fourth, Zach Wilson gave the Blue Crabs a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly. The lead increased to 2-0 in the bottom of the eighth on D’Arby Myers’ solo home run.
Long Island had several pristine opportunities to drive in runs. With one out in the second inning, two singles and a walk loaded the bases, but Carlos Hughes and Anthony Vega struck out to end the threat. The Ducks had runners on the corners to open up the seventh, but reliever Navery Moore retired Matt Wessinger, Hughes, and Vega. In the ninth, Ruben Gotay pinch-hit with runners at first and second and one out, but grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, ending the game.
Burres garnered the win, tossing six innings of two-hit ball, striking out seven and walking two. Downs struck out five over eight innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Cody Eppley earned his 13th save in the ninth.
Mike Dowd was 3-for-4 to lead the Ducks.
ON THE MOUND: Bruce Kern toes the rubber for the Ducks after his start Monday at Lancaster was rained out. Though Kern pitched four innings, the game was unofficial. Sunday marks the ninth start of the year for Kern who has allowed three earned runs in his past seven outings combined. The Long Island native beat Bridgeport and York back-to-back, turning in a combined 13 strikeouts in 14.1 innings, allowing two runs on 11 hits. Despite his 2-1 record, the Ducks are 6-2 when Kern gets the start.
Daryl Thompson makes his 12th start for the Blue Crabs. The former major leaguer has been winless since June 15, when the Maryland native tossed seven innings of eight-hit ball, allowing three runs with two strikeouts against Bridgeport. Thompson faced the Ducks in three innings out of the bullpen on May 14. He allowed three runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout. Hailing from La Plata, Thompson was drafted in the 8th round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Montreal Expos, and made his debut with the Cincinnati Reds in 2008.
