GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. Regency Furniture Stadium (Waldorf, MD).

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP:  The Long Island Ducks (3-1, 43-31) look to win the series against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (0-5, 26-48), having won the first two games of the four-game series. After winning the first six meetings against Southern Maryland, Long Island has been victorious in five of the past seven games. Tonight marks the 14th matchup between the two teams. The Ducks are on a three-game winning streak to kick-off the second half.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: John Brownell’s strong outing lifted the Ducks over the Blue Crabs 6-2 in game two of a four-game set.

In the first inning, Anthony Vega singled, stole second base, moved the third on an error, and scored on a passed ball. The passed ball came on a two-strike, two-out pitch to Cody Puckett in which he swung through for strike three. But as the ball ricocheted to the backstop, Puckett reached first base and Vega scored, giving the Ducks a 1-0 lead.

The Ducks added three more runs in the fifth, taking a 4-0 lead. Fehlandt Lentini’s RBI single, a throwing error, and Delta Cleary Jr.’s run-scoring triple did the damage. The advantage increased to 6-0 in the sixth on Ruben Gotay’s RBI double and a sacrifice fly by Mike Blanke.

Brownell shut out the Blue Crabs over six innings, but allowed his only run in the seventh. Zach Wilson’s RBI single made it 6-1. Over the outing, the Ducks right-hander allowed six hits and a walk with six strikeouts in his sixth victory of the year.

Against Ducks reliever Nick Struck in the ninth, the Blue Crabs mustered one run on Michael Snyder’s solo blast, but Long Island held on to win 6-2.

Southern Maryland’s Brian Grening took the loss, falling to 3-4, allowing four runs (three earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks in five innings.

Lentini and Dan Lyons each collected two hits, while Patrick Crider tossed a scoreless eighth inning.

ON THE MOUND: Left-hander Darin Downs looks to win his third game in a row. Against York on June 28, Downs struck out 10 in seven innings, surrendering just one run on three hits. He followed that performance with another on July 3 versus Sugar Land. The Florida native struck out seven over seven innings, yielding two runs on seven hits. Downs has not walked a batter in 16.2 innings. Tonight he faces Southern Maryland for the third time. He’s 2-0 with a 2.77 ERA against the Blue Crabs.

Freedom Division All-Star Brian Burres gets the start for the Blue Crabs. Over his past six outings, Burres has allowed five earned runs in 30.1 innings, an ERA of 1.50. Against Somerset on July 4, Burres’ most recent outing, the Nashville native struck out five over six innings, giving up one run on six hits and one walk. The former big leaguer did not receive a decision against the Ducks on May 15, but surrendered two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and three walks in six and one-third innings. Burres spent time in the big leagues with Baltimore, Toronto, and Pittsburgh.
