Game 71: Ducks at Barnstormers

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium (Lancaster, PA)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP:  The Long Island Ducks (40-30) open up the second half of the 2016 Atlantic League season with a three-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers (34-35). The Ducks clinched the First Half Liberty Division title, winning eight of their last ten games, with a two-game cushion over the second-place Somerset Patriots. The Barnstormers finished in third place, five-and-a-half games back of York, in the Freedom Division. In the first half, the Ducks and Barnstormers split the ten head-to-head matchups. At Clipper Magazine Stadium this season, Long Island is 0-3.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: With 7,602 fans in attendance, the largest single-game crowd in franchise history, the Ducks completed a three-game sweep of the Skeeters, winning 5-2.

Against former New York Yankees pitcher Brett Marshall (0-2), the Ducks nabbed runs in the second and third innings. Carlos Hughes’ double to center field brought in the first run, while Anthony Gatto walked with the bases loaded, giving Long Island a 2-0 lead. In the fourth, Dan Lyons’ run-scoring double and Cody Puckett’s RBI single increased the advantage to 4-0.

Despite Sugar Land scoring on a wild pitch in the sixth, the Ducks extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning on Puckett’s RBI single. The Skeeters added their second run in the seventh on Patrick Palmeiro’s sacrifice fly.

Left-hander Darin Downs (6-4) earned the win with seven strikeouts in seven innings, allowing two runs on seven hits. The Ducks took advantage of six walks and five hits against Marshall, who surrendered four runs in three innings in the loss. James Lomangino struck out one in the ninth for his first save.

Fehlandt Lentini and Puckett each tallied three hits to lead the Flock.

ON THE MOUND: Bruce Kern, one of the Atlantic League’s hottest pitchers, toes the rubber for Long Island. Kern enters Monday having won two in a row, defeating Bridgeport on June 24 and York on June 29. In his past three starts, the Yaphank, NY native has allowed two runs on 17 hits in 20.1 innings, striking out 18 and walking three. Against Lancaster on June 19 at Bethpage Ballpark, Kern shutout the Barnstormers over six innings, allowing six hits while striking out five and walking three.

Terry Doyle starts his 11th game for Lancaster. The New Hampshire native searches for his first win since June 1, when he defeated the Ducks at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Against the Flock that day, the righty yielded four runs on eight hits over six innings, striking out three and walking two. In Doyle’s past two outings, he’s allowed an average of four runs and eight-and-a-half hits in 13.1 total innings. Doyle came to Lancaster following four Triple-A starts with Baltimore’s International League team, the Norfolk Tides.
