GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: Long Island (36-29) meets the York Revolution (37-28) in the third game of a four-game set. Following Tuesday’s win, the Ducks have beaten the Revs twice in the past eight meetings. With just five games remaining in the first half, the Ducks and Somerset Patriots are tied for first place in the Liberty Division. In the Freedom Division, York leads second-place Sugar Land by two-and-a-half games.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Darin Downs turned in a seven-inning, 10-strikeout performance to lift Long Island to a 3-1 win over York.

The Revolution jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out RBI double by Michael Burgess. The Ducks took a 2-1 advantage in the second on RBI singles from Mike Blanke and Mike Dowd. Anthony Vega kept the Revs off the board in the third when he robbed York catcher Sal Paniagua of a home run in left field. Dan Lyons scored from third base on a wild pitch in the eighth inning to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead.

Downs earned his fifth win of the year and increased his strikeout total to an Atlantic-League lead of 83. After allowing a first-inning run, the lefty retired 18 of the next 19 batters he faced. James Simmons took the loss after yielding two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and a walk over six innings. Amalio Diaz tossed a scoreless eighth inning of relief, striking out two. Closer Todd Coffey picked up his 11th save with a scoreless ninth. Coffey is now 11-for-11 in save opportunities this year.

Dan Lyons was 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, while Fehlandt Lentini was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

ON THE MOUND: The red-hot Bruce Kern toes the rubber following two masterful starts. The Long Island native has pitched 13.1 scoreless innings dating back to June 14. Against Lancaster on June 19 and Bridgeport on June 24, Kern has surrendered ten hits and three walks with 13 strikeouts. In his past six outings, Kern has allowed three runs in 21.1 innings. Kern’s inning per start has increased, as well. Against Bridgeport on Sunday, he tossed a season-high seven and one-third innings.

Former big leaguer Tony Pena takes the baseball for the second time against Long Island. On June 7, Pena shutout the Ducks over eight innings, allowing three hits and a walk with six strikeouts. The former Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago White Sox reliever has lost his past two starts, allowing four earned runs and nine hits in each outing. The Dominican Republic native stepped into the starting role on May 13 and has compiled a 3-2 record with a 4.19 ERA.
