Game 65: Ducks vs. Revolution
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: Long Island (35-29) battles the York Revolution (37-27) in game two of a four-game series. The Revolution has beaten the Ducks in six of seven meetings. Long Island trails first-place Somerset by one game in the Liberty Division, while York has maintained its three-game hold over Sugar Land in the Freedom Division.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Revolution broke a 4-4 tie with four runs in the ninth inning to beat the Ducks 8-4 in the series opener.
Both teams traded runs in the first inning. Against starter John Brownell, York’s Joel Guzman plated a run with a single to left field to take a 1-0 lead. Cody Puckett’s RBI single off of Frank Gailey tied the game. In the fourth, York took a 3-1 lead on RBI singles from Alfredo Marte and Salvador Paniagua. They made it 4-1 on an error in the fifth.
In the sixth, after a leadoff double by Anthony Vega and a one-out walk to Lew Ford, Puckett clobbered a three-run home run to left, evening the score at four apiece. It would stay that way until the ninth.
Todd Coffey took the mound in the ninth, trying to keep the game tied, but York rallied for four runs. Guzman and Brandon Chaves drove in runs, while two more runs crossed the plate on an error.
Neither starter factored into the decision. Brownell allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and a walk. The righty struck out six over six and two-thirds innings. Gailey struck out four over five and one-third innings, yielding four earned runs on six hits with two walks. Luis Perdomo, who pitched a scoreless eighth, collected the win, while Coffey took the loss.
Vega added three hits, including a double and triple, while Mike Dowd and Puckett added two.
ON THE MOUND: Lefty Darin Downs searched for his first win since June 12. On June 7 against York on the road, the Florida native turned in one of his best starts of the season despite getting the loss. Downs struck out 11 batters over seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and a walk, and game the Ducks lost 1-0. The second-year Ducks has 73 strikeouts, four behind league leader and teammate Jack Snodgrass, for second-most in the Atlantic League. Tuesday marks Downs’ second start against the Revolution.
Former first-round draft selection James Simmons faces the Ducks for the first time in his career. The California product was taken 26th overall by the Oakland Athletics in the 2007 MLB Draft. The right-hander seeks his first win since late May, when he allowed three runs on eight hits in six innings to beat Southern Maryland 5-3. In his past start, on June 23 at Southern Maryland, Simmons surrendered four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and one walk in five innings.
