Game 64: Ducks vs. Revolution
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: Long Island (35-28) opens up a seven-game homestand with the first of a four-game set against the York Revolution (36-27). The Revolution leads the season series against the Ducks, winning five of six. With seven games remaining in the first half of the season, the Ducks and Somerset Patriots are tied for first place in the Liberty Division. York leads the Freedom Division by three games over the Sugar Land Skeeters.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks took the finale of a four-game series with the Bridgeport Bluefish, winning 4-0.
Long Island starter Mark Blackmar dazzled over seven innings to win his fifth game, striking out seven while yielding four hits. Blackmar entered Sunday second in the Atlantic League in ERA, but exited as the league’s top man with an ERA of 2.49. The righty retired the first eight batters he faced, and threw just 74 pitches.
In the top of the seventh inning, Ruben Gotay’s solo home run gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead. Long Island added three more runs in the ninth on Gotay’s two-run double and Anthony Vega’s RBI single.
Bridgeport starter Blake Beaven pitched well, allowing just one run on six hits with six strikeouts and one walk, but the Bluefish mustered just four hits in the game. Ducks relievers Eury De La Rosa and Frank DeJiulio Jr. each pitched perfect innings in the eighth and ninth, respectively.
Dan Johnson, Cody Puckett, and Delta Cleary Jr. had two hits apiece.
ON THE MOUND: John Brownell takes the mound one win shy of the all-time record held by Randy Leek. Brownell tied the mark, winning his 40th game, on June 5 against Sugar Land. The fifth-year Duck has turned in four consecutive starts allowing two runs or less. Brownell was the tough-luck loser in his past meeting, against York on June 22, surrendering two runs on seven hits with nine strikeouts and one walk over seven and one-third innings. The Ducks fell in that game 2-1.
Left-handed pitcher Frank Gailey faces John Brownell and the Ducks for the second time in five days. Gailey was the winning pitcher, going toe-to-toe with Brownell over seven-plus innings. The Philadelphia native allowed an early home run to Mike Dowd in the second, but did not give up another hit in the ballgame. The second-year man out of the Toronto Blue Jays farm system has made four starts in 2016. In total, Gailey is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA.
