Game 61: Ducks at Bluefish
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:12 p.m. at Ballpark at Harbor Yard (Bridgeport, CT)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: Long Island (32-28) faces the Bridgeport Bluefish (27-33) in game two of a four-game series. Despite losing last night, the Ducks own a 5-2 record against Bridgeport in the 2016 Ferry Cup Series. Long Island currently sits two-and-a-half games back of first-place Somerset, while Bridgeport is seven-and-a-half games back in the Liberty Division.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Luis Nunez’s single in the bottom of the tenth inning drove in the game-winning run as the Bluefish topped the Ducks 6-5.
Long Island opened the scoring in the top of the second on a solo home run from Dan Lyons, who returned to the lineup after missing 14 games with an injury. Bridgeport jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second on back-to-back-to-back RBIs from Nunez, Rossmel Perez, and Anthony Giansanti.
The Ducks cut the deficit to one on Ruben Gotay’s RBI groundout in the third, but the Bluefish cashed in on an error in the fourth, making it 4-2.
After trimming the Bridgeport lead to 4-3 in the fifth, the Ducks took the lead in the eighth when Matt Wessinger’s single to left field plated Cody Puckett and Mike Dowd. Bridgeport evened the score at 5-5 in the eighth on Josh Vitter’s sacrifice fly.
In the 10th inning, Nunez came to the plate with runners and second and third, and singled down the third base line for the walk-off victory.
Darin Downs did not receive a decision despite six innings of six-hit ball with four strikeouts and two walks. Of the four runs surrendered by Downs, just three were earned. After a tumultuous three-run second inning, the left-hander settled down, retiring 12 of the next 16 batters.
Bridgeport starter D.J. Mitchell surrendered three runs (two earned) on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks over five innings, but did not receive a decision. R.J. Hively earned the win, while Todd Coffey took the loss.
Wessinger and Lyons each collected two hits, while Lentini reached base five times.
ON THE MOUND: Bruce Kern returns to the mound after his best outing of the season. On June 19 against Lancaster, the righty shutout the Barnstormers over six innings, allowing six hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Despite the positive performance, Kern did not factor into the decision in the 3-2 Ducks win. Against Bridgeport on May 7, the Yaphank native pitched three innings, surrendering one run on three hits with one strikeout and one walk in a 7-1 Ducks win.
Former Yankee Jonathan Albaladejo brings a 5-2 record into Friday night’s ballgame. The Tampa native joined Bridgeport after spending the early portion of 2016 with Reynosa of the Mexican League. Albaladejo faces Long Island for the first time. The 33-year-old has won three of his previous five starts, including a seven-inning shutout performance of York with four strikeouts.
