Game 51: Ducks vs. Bees
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (28-22) meet the New Britain Bees (24-26) in the second of a three-game series. Long Island and New Britain have each won four of the eight head-to-head matchups. With a win yesterday, the Ducks increased their lead over the third-place Bees to four games in the Liberty Division.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Mike Dowd’s eighth-inning RBI single broke a tie to lift the Ducks over the Bees 5-4.
The Ducks trailed early in the game after starter Bruce Kern allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate. In the first, the Bees jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a fielding error that plated Greg Golson and an RBI single from Michael Crouse. Ruben Gotay’s solo home run in the bottom of the first cut the deficit to 2-1.
Anthony Vega’s two-out, two-run base hit gave the Ducks 3-2 lead as Dan Johnson and Mike Blanke scored. Golson, a former Yankees outfielder, tied the game at three with a solo homer in the fifth.
In the home half of the fifth, Dan Johnson, making his Ducks debut, cranked a solo home run to right to give the Ducks a one-run lead. But in the top of the seventh, the Bees tied the game at four on Jovan Rosa’s RBI groundout.
Ducks reliever Amalio Diaz escaped a trying jam in the eighth inning. With two outs and the go-ahead run at third, Diaz struck out Steve Carrillo to end the threat.
In the bottom of the inning, Cody Puckett reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second base on a balk. Dowd came to the plate and lined a single to center field, scoring Puckett for the go-ahead run. Todd Coffey earned the save in the ninth inning.
Diaz was the winning pitcher, Eric Fornataro took the loss. Neither starter factored into the decision. Kern surrendered three runs (two unearned) on seven hits over five innings with four strikeouts. Brian Dupra, the Bees’ starter, allowed four runs on seven hits over seven innings with two strikeouts and three walks.
Johnson scored two runs, while Matt Wessinger reached base twice. On the mound, Frank DeJiulio Jr. pitched a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts.
ON THE MOUND: Jack Snodgrass, who holds the league’s second-most strikeouts (61), faces the Bees for the second time. The 6-foot-6 left-hander has won two of his past four starts, posting an ERA of 1.88 over the stretch. On May 28, Snodgrass shut out New Britain over six innings en route to a 6-0 Ducks win. In that game, the former San Francisco farm hand struck out five and walked one, while yielding seven hits. Entering tonight, Snodgrass is one win shy of five, which would tie the league’s leaders.
With an Atlantic League-best 1.71 ERA, Cole Johnson takes the hill against the Ducks. The Appleton, Wis. native has tallied wins in two of his past three starts, including a seven-inning shutout performance against Long Island on May 27. Despite a good 4-4 record and league-best ERA, Johnson’s success has ramped up on the road. He’s 3-1 with a 1.33 ERA while pitching in a visitor’s uniform. From 2011-2015, the righty worked his way through the Minnesota farm system after being selected in the 44th round of the MLB Draft.
