Game 50: Ducks vs. Bees
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (27-22) begin a seven-game homestand with the first of a three-game set with the New Britain Bees (24-25). Long Island enters Tuesday trailing first-place Somerset by a half-game. New Britain sits three games behind the Ducks having lost three in a row.
SUNDAY’S RESULT: An offensive explosion lifted the Ducks to a 14-4 win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. With the 20-hit outburst, Long Island won the series two games to one.
Fehlandt Lentini homered on the first pitch of the game to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead. An error and a wild pitch produced two more runs in the first inning for Long Island. In the second, the Ducks took a 6-0 lead as Delta Cleary Jr., Ruben Gotay, and Cody Puckett combined for three consecutive RBI singles. Lentini’s RBI double in the third put the Ducks up 7-0.
After Southern Maryland plated two runs in the third, Mike Blanke and Matt Wessinger countered in the fourth with an RBI single and sacrifice fly, respectively, to extend the advantage to 9-2.
Gotay’s two-run homer in the fifth pushed the lead to 11-2. Wessinger’s sacrifice fly and Lentini’s RBI single gave the Ducks two more runs. Blanke put the finishing touches on the Ducks scoring with a sacrifice fly in the eighth.
Darin Downs improved to 4-3 with the win. Over six innings, the former Houston Astros prospect gave up two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out four.
Six Ducks had multi-hit games including Lentini, Gotay, Puckett, Blanke, Mike Dowd, and Anthony Vega.
ON THE MOUND: Righty Bruce Kern makes his first start since May 28, having pitched a combined three scoreless innings with seven strikeouts in three June appearances. In Kern’s past start, against New Britain on May 28, he took the loss, tossing four and one-third innings yielding four earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. As a starter, Kern has given up seven runs in 14 innings. As a reliever, Kern has not coughed up a run in six combined innings.
New Britain starter Brian Dupra faces the Ducks for the first time in 2016. With a 2.29 earned run average, the Rochester native sits third in the Atlantic League behind teammate Cole Johnson (1.72) and Long Island’s Mark Blackmar (2.03). Dupra ripped off four straight wins from May 8-26, but has since not taken a decision in either of his past two starts. Drafted out of the University of Notre Dame, Dupra joins the Bees following five seasons in the Washington Nationals farm system.
