Game 49: Ducks at Blue Crabs
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 2:05 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium (Waldorf, Md.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (26-22) take on the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (18-29) in the rubber game of a three-game series and final game of a six-game road trip. The Ducks have won seven of nine meetings between the two teams thus far in 2016, outscoring the Blue Crabs 54-31. Long Island remains tied with the Somerset Patriots for first place in the Liberty Division, while the Blue Crabs sit in last place in the Freedom Division, nine games behind the York Revolution.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Despite another masterful performance from John Brownell (4-2), the Ducks fell to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 2-1 in the middle game of the series.
The right-hander turned in his second consecutive complete game with eight innings of two-run ball. He gave up just six hits and one walk in the game while striking out a season-high 10 batters. He threw 109 pitches on the night, 69 for strikes, and Brownell’s only mistake came in the bottom of the sixth inning. With a runner at second and two outs, Jamar Walton hit a 2-2 pitch over the right field wall for a two-run home run that put Southern Maryland in front 2-1.
Long Island was stymied offensively for seven innings by Tim Sexton (1-1). The right-hander, who had given up six runs in four innings earlier this season against the Ducks, allowed just four singles and a walk while striking out six batters and threw just 87 pitches, 63 for strikes. The only run he surrendered came in the top of the sixth when Anthony Vega singled, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out RBI single to center by Tyler Colvin.
Fehlandt Lentini opened the eighth inning with a single off of Justin Berg, and Mike Blanke collected a two-out single in the ninth against Cody Eppley. However, the Ducks could not pull even, as Eppley collected his ninth save of the year.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks turn to Darin Downs to try and clinch a series win and a .500 road trip. The southpaw turned in an outstanding start to kick off the road trip on Tuesday at York, but received no run support in a 1-0 loss. He tossed seven innings of one-run ball, allowing just five hits and a walk while tying a career-high with 11 strikeouts. Downs is now winless in three consecutive starts after earning three straight wins from May 8-20. Earlier this season, the former Major Leaguer earned a win over the Blue Crabs at Bethpage Ballpark. Pitching in game two of a doubleheader on May 14, he pitched seven innings of two-run ball, giving up eight hits and no walks while striking out eight in a 9-2 victory. Downs also won his only start in 2015 at Regency Furniture Stadium, a 6-3 triumph on August 27.
Scott Snodgress will look to give the Blue Crabs a second consecutive series win on Sunday. The southpaw has made eight starts this year and has compiled a 1-3 record with a 5.00 ERA in that span. His most recent outing was his best start of the year, as he threw seven shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out six. Snodgress took a no-decision though in a 2-1 victory at Sugar Land on Tuesday. The first-year Blue Crab has made two starts against the Ducks this season and has lost both, combining to allow 12 runs (11 earned) in eight and one-third innings (11.88 ERA). Long Island has roughed him for up 15 hits and five walks in the two outings while striking out just five times, dealing him 10-2 and 7-5 defeats.
