Game 44: Ducks at Revolution
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:30 p.m. at PeoplesBank Park (York, Pa.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (24-19) kick off a six-game road trip with the opener of a three-game series against the York Revolution (26-18). It marks the first matchup of the year between the two teams, who will face each other 10 times over Long Island’s next 24 games. The Ducks are currently just a half-game behind the first place Somerset Patriots in the Liberty Division, while the Revolution are atop the Freedom Division standings, two games ahead of the rival Lancaster Barnstormers.
SUNDAY’S RESULT: A quick three-game homestand ended on a high note with a 9-1 victory for the Ducks over the Sugar Land Skeeters to earn the series win.
Ducks starter John Brownell (4-1) took center stage in the series finale. The right-hander was in vintage form, tossing a complete game and allowing just one run on four hits and a walk while striking out seven. He needed just 103 pitches (74 strikes) to pick up Long Island’s first complete game of the season and his 17th in a Ducks uniform. With the win and start, he tied Randy Leek for the all-time franchise record in wins (40) and games started (91). Comparatively, Leek had six complete games as a Duck.
Offensively, the Ducks quickly recovered after falling behind 1-0 and roughed up Atlantic League wins leader Parker Frazier (5-2). An RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Cody Puckett tied the game at one in the bottom of the first. Long Island would showcase their home run power in the third. Fehlandt Lentini lined a solo homer to left and Puckett followed three batters later with his second two-run blast in as many days, putting the Ducks ahead 4-1.
Two more runs came across in the fifth inning thanks to a Mike Blanke RBI fielder’s choice and Blake Tekotte’s two-out RBI double to right-center. Ruben Gotay went on to launch his first homer as a Duck in the seventh inning off of Chris Rearick, increasing the lead to 7-1. The Ducks rounded out their scoring with two more runs in the eighth off of Raul Rivera on Anthony Vega’s RBI triple and Matt Wessinger’s run-scoring groundout. Long Island finished with 14 hits on the day, including four for Dan Lyons and three for Lentini.
ON THE MOUND: Darin Downs will look to begin the road trip on a high note for Long Island. The left-hander has struggled in his past two starts and is now 3-2 with a 5.08 ERA in his first eight starts of the year. He was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits over five innings and walked five batters in an 8-4 loss at Lancaster on June 1. Downs is now 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA in his past two starts, yielding 19 hits and five walks while striking out nine over eight and two-thirds innings. In his three starts prior to that, the second-year Duck was 3-0 with a 2.70 ERA and gave up just 16 hits and two walks over 20 innings pitched with 21 strikeouts. Tonight will be Downs’ first career start against the Revolution.
York will counter with Tony Pena in the series opener. Thus far, the right-hander has compiled a perfect 4-0 record with a 3.57 ERA in nine games (four starts) this year. He earned the win in his most recent start on June 1 at Bridgeport, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks over five innings with one strikeout. Pena has not allowed more than three runs nor has pitched more than five innings any of his appearances this season. Last year, he faced the Ducks four times in relief and did not give up a run over three and two-thirds innings of work.
