Game 42: Ducks vs. Skeeters
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (22-19) and the Sugar Land Skeeters (23-19) tussle in the middle game of a three-game series. The Skeeters have the head-to-head advantage this season, winning three of the five meetings against the Ducks. Long Island sits one-and-a-half games behind the Somerset Patriots for first place in the Liberty Division.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks threatened with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, but fell short to the Skeeters, 3-1, in the series opener.
Sugar Land starter Sean Gallagher surrendered just one run on four hits over eight tremendous innings with nine strikeouts and five walks. The Ducks’ lone run against Gallagher came in the fourth inning as Anthony Vega drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game 1-1.
The Skeeters took a 2-1 advantage in the fifth as Jeff Dominguez scored from third when Delwyn Young grounded into a double play. In the ninth, Barfield crushed his eight home run of the season to give Sugar Land a 3-1 lead.
Against Sugar Land closer Derrick Loop in the ninth, the Ducks rallied to load the bases. Both Mike Dowd and Fehlandt Lentini singled, and Dan Lyons worked a walk. But with two outs, Ruben Gotay grounded out to shortstop to end the Long Island threat.
Starting pitcher Jack Snodgrass took the loss, dropping to 4-4, as he gave up two runs on seven hits, while striking out five and walking three in six innings. Offensively, Vega reached base three times, while Sean Burroughs and Dowd recorded two hits each. Eury De La Rosa and Amalio Diaz each pitched scoreless innings of relief.
ON THE MOUND: Texan Mark Blackmar, who sits fourth in the Atlantic League with a 1.77 ERA, meets Sugar Land for the second time. Back in his home state on May 18, Blackmar shut out the Skeeters over six innings, giving up just four hits with three strikeouts. The 24-year-old has yielded runs in just three of his seven outings. Against New Britain last Saturday, the righty did not get a decision despite surrendering three runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Left-hander Aaron Thompson makes his fourth start of the season for the Skeeters. Thompson joined the club on May 6 after spending 2014 and 2015 as a reliever for the Minnesota Twins. The former first-round draft pick made his MLB Debut in 2011 with Pittsburgh, but was originally drafted 22nd overall in the 2005 MLB Draft by the Marlins. In six appearances for Sugar Land, Thompson is 1-0 with a 2.59 ERA. In his past start against Lancaster on May 30, Thompson gave up one run on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks but did not get the decision; Sugar Land lost to Lancaster 10-4.
