Game 41: Ducks vs. Skeeters

Jack Snodgrass (22)

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (22-18) welcome in the Sugar Land Skeeters (22-19) for a three-game series. The Ducks split a four-game series with the Skeeters in Texas in mid-May. This weekend represents the first trip to Bethpage Ballpark for Sugar Land in 2016.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks could not play catch-up against Lancaster, as Long Island fell in the series finale, 7-4.

Tyler Colvin’s RBI double gave Long Island a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Barnstormers plated three runs in the bottom of the frame, scoring all of their runs with two outs to take a 3-1 lead. Former Mets infielder Ruben Gotay’s solo home run in the third cut the deficit to 3-2, but once again Lancaster extended its lead. In the bottom of the inning, Kevin Ahrens’ solo homer pushed Lancaster in front 4-2.

The Ducks tried to respond again as Anthony Vega cut the lead to 4-3 with an RBI single in the fourth, but in the fifth, the Barnstormers added two more runs to take a 6-3 lead. Blake Tekotte homered to pull the Ducks within two at 6-4, but the Barnstormers answered yet again, taking a 7-4 lead on an RBI single from Ahrens.

Fehlandt Lentini, Tekotte, Vega, and Gotay each had two hits, while Ducks starter Bobby Blevins fell to 1-3 as he surrendered six runs on ten hits over four and one-third innings with one strikeout.

ON THE MOUND: Fresh off of his shutout performance against the New Britain Bees, Ducks left-hander Jack Snodgrass takes the hill. On May 28, the Bowling Green, Ky. native struck out five over six innings while yielding seven hits to improve to 4-3 with a 3.40 ERA. Snodgrass looks to avenge an 8-7 loss at Sugar Land on May 17 when he surrendered eight runs (five earned) on eight hits over five and two-thirds innings. The first-year Duck leads the Atlantic League with 49 strikeouts.

Sean Gallagher, who ranks seventh in the league with a 2.76 ERA, faces Long Island for the second time. Gallagher was the tough-luck loser on May 18, receiving no run support in a 3-0 loss. Gallagher yielded two earned runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out two and walking two. The Boston, Mass. product was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round of the 2004 MLB Draft.
