Game 39: Ducks at Barnstormers
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:00 p.m. at Clipper Magazine Stadium (Lancaster, Pa.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (22-16) play the middle game their three-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers (19-18) at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The Ducks lead the season series three games to one over the Barnstormers. Long Island sits atop the Liberty Division by a half-game over the Somerset Patriots, while Lancaster is currently third in the Freedom Division, four games behind the in-state rival York Revolution.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Two-out runs ended up costing the Ducks in the series opener, as the Barnstormers earned a 7-1 win on Tuesday night. Lancaster struck three times for a two-out, two-run hit to erase an early 1-0 deficit.
Long Island had taken the lead in the fourth inning with a two-out hit of their own, as Blake Tekotte lined a broken bat single off Barnstormers starter Mike Lee. The lead was short-lived though, as Lancaster scored twice in the bottom of the frame. Josh Bell lifted a 2-2 offering from Ducks starter John Brownell over the right-center field wall to put the hosts in front 2-1.
The result was the same one inning later. With two on and two out, Kevin Ahrens hit a two-run single off the right field wall, increasing Lancaster’s advantage to 4-1. Logan Schafer lined a solo home run to right in the seventh, and Lance Zawadzki rounded out the scoring in the eighth with a two-out, two-run homer to right-center.
Brownell suffered his first loss of the season and was denied the opportunity to tie Randy Leek for the franchise record in wins (40). The righty gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out five in six inning. After Lee, who was making his first start of the year, gave up a run in four innings, Ryan Dennick followed with two scoreless innings to earn the win. Lancaster’s bullpen limited Long Island to just one hit and one walk over the final five innings of the game.
ON THE MOUND: Darin Downs takes the mound for the Ducks, looking to bounce back from a rough outing on Thursday at Bethpage Ballpark. Against the Bluefish, he surrendered eight runs (six earned) on 11 hits in just three and two-thirds innings of work but took a no-decision when the Ducks rallied back for a 10-9 win. Prior to that, the southpaw had won three consecutive starts and compiled a 2.70 ERA along with 21 strikeouts to just two walks in 20 innings during that stretch. Downs took a no-decision against the Barnstormers on May 3 but allowed just one hit and one unearned run over six innings while walking four and striking out seven. Overall, the former big leaguer is 3-1 with a 4.11 ERA in seven starts.
Lancaster will send Terry Doyle to the mound, looking to guarantee themselves a series win. The right-hander picked up a win his last time out but allowed five runs over six innings against the Sugar Land Skeeters on Friday. He did strike out six without walking anyone and gave up six hits. Doyle will be making his fifth start of the season on Wednesday and is 1-2 with a 5.64 ERA. Both of his losses came against Southern Maryland, while he took a no-decision against Somerset. This will be his first outing of the season against Long Island.
