Game 37: Ducks vs. Bees
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (21-15) wrap up a four-game series with the New Britain Bees (18-18) on Sunday afternoon. The Bees have won two of three games in the series and four out of six on the season. Long Island and Somerset are tied atop the Liberty Division with identical records, while New Britain sits three games behind.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks and Bees split a Saturday doubleheader at Bethpage Ballpark. In the opener, Jack Snodgrass shut down New Britain bats over six innings en route to a 6-0 Ducks win. Snodgrass struck out five while surrendering seven hits and one walk to improve to 4-3.
Long Island bats jumped on New Britain starter Josh Zeid early as Dan Lyons doubled in Fehlandt Lentini. Lyons later scored from second base on a Bees’ error to give the Ducks a 2-0 lead. After another run in the third, back-to-back RBIs from Lyons and Lew Ford gave the Ducks a 5-0 lead in the fourth. In the sixth, Ford drove in Lentini for the final run of the ballgame to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Offensively, Lentini and Ford each tallied three hits, while Lyons and Blake Tekotte both went 2-for-3. Nick Struck pitched a scoreless seventh with one strikeout.
In game two, Long Island fell behind early and rallied late, but the Bees held on for a 9-7 win.
Entering the sixth inning, the Bees had a 5-3 lead but took command against the Ducks bullpen. Jovan Rosa’s grand slam off of Jarrett Casey plated four in the inning, giving New Britain a 9-3 advantage.
The Ducks would storm back, however, as Tyler Colvin scored on a throwing error in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-4. Against Bees reliever Sean Gleason in the ninth, Long Island scored three runs before the first out was recorded. Batting in place of Ford, Mike Dowd drove in Lentini with an RBI single to make it 9-5. Lyons scored on a wild pitch and Colvin added another run with an RBI groundout, cutting the lead to 9-7.
Gleason stormed back to retire the next three Ducks, and secure the win for New Britain.
Lyons was 3-for-5 with an RBI double and two runs scored, while Lentini, Ford, and Colvin each had two hits. Kern took the loss after four and one-third innings yielding five runs (four earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
ON THE MOUND: First year Ducks pitcher Mark Blackmar makes his seventh start of the season. The Texan has posted 13 consecutive scoreless innings after shutting down Sugar Land over six on May 18 and Bridgeport over seven on May 24. The 23-year-old has allowed runs in just two of his six starts, allowing just 19 hits over 35 and two-thirds innings this season
New Britain righty Shawn Haviland, a former student-athlete at Harvard University, makes his third start of 2016. The Middletown, Conn. native joins the Bees after spending 2015 with the Pawtucket Red Sox, Boston’s Triple-A affiliate. After appearing eight times out of the bullpen to start the season, Haviland has started his past two games. As a starter, he has surrendered five runs on 14 hits over nine innings with four strikeouts and four walks.
