Game 34: Ducks vs. Bees

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (20-13) kick off a four-game series with the Atlantic League’s newest franchise, the New Britain Bees (16-17). The Bees won two of three against the Ducks in April at New Britain Stadium. This trip marks New Britain’s first visit to Bethpage Ballpark.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Mike Dowd’s double in the seventh inning drove in the go-ahead run as Long Island beat Bridgeport 10-9. The Ducks won the series two games to one, and overtook Somerset for first place in the Liberty Division.

The Ducks rocked Bridgeport starter Jimmy Patterson early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Fehlandt Lentini led off the inning with a home run, while Tyler Colvin, Mike Blanke, and Ruben Gotay each drove in a run.

The Bluefish touched up Ducks starter Darin Downs in the third inning. A two-run double by Josh Vitters and an RBI single for Bridgeport cut the deficit to 4-3. The big blow in the inning came from Jonathan Galvez, whose two-run home run gave the Bluefish a 5-4 lead. Bridgeport added four more runs in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 9-4.

The Ducks scored two runs in the fourth on an RBI double from Dan Lyons and an error, cutting the deficit to 9-6. In the bottom of the fifth, Long Island thundered back to tie the game. Dowd singled in Sean Burroughs and Blanke, while Lentini tied the game with an RBI single.

Dowd would come through again for the Ducks with an RBI double in the seventh to give Long Island a 10-9 lead. The catcher finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored.

The Long Island bullpen kept Bridgeport off the board from the fifth inning on. Kevin Vance, Nick Struck, Frank DeJiulio Jr., Eury De La Rosa, and Amalio Diaz combined to allow just two hits and an unearned run. Todd Coffey pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save of the season.

ON THE MOUND: New York native Bobby Blevins looks to win his second game of the season. It’s the 31-year-old’s seventh start of the season and first against New Britain. Blevins enters Friday night’s contest with a 1-1 record and an ERA of 4.69. The former Los Angeles Dodgers draft choice did not get a decision in his last outing on May 21 against Somerset. In that game, Blevins yielded six runs on seven hits in four innings, while striking out two and walking one.

Cole Johnson, who spent five seasons in the Minnesota farm system, makes his seventh start of the year. Johnson is 2-3 with a 2.25 ERA, having lost his most recent outing on May 21 against York. Johnson returns to the city of New Britain, Conn. after spending parts of 2013 and 2014 with the Rock Cats, the former Double-A affiliate of the Twins.
