Game 33: Ducks vs. Bluefish
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (19-13) host the Bridgeport Bluefish (11-21) in the rubber game of a three-game set. The Ducks have taken four of five games against the Bluefish in the 2016 Ferry Cup Series. Tonight’s matchup is the last with Bridgeport until June 23.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks exploded for a 20-hit performance, while starting pitcher John Brownell surpassed Randy Leek’s franchise record for career innings pitched, in a 15-5 rout of Bridgeport.
Brownell tossed six and one-third innings, eclipsing Leek’s record after the first out of the fifth inning. The Nebraska native struck out four and walked three, while giving up four earned runs on six hits. With the win, Brownell improved to 3-0. Now with 589 and two-thirds innings with the Ducks, Brownell needs two more starts and one more win to tie Leek for the franchise record.
Long Island bats exploded for the most hits in a game since Sept. 6, 2015. Shortstop Dan Lyons’ 5-for-5 night with three doubles, two RBI, and three runs scored led the way. Lyons’ performance was the first five-hit game for a Ducks player since Fehlandt Lentini had five hits against Lancaster on May 9, 2014. Tyler Colvin crushed a grand slam over the right field wall in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Ducks a 7-0 lead. The Ducks would go on to score four runs in the sixth and four more in the eighth.
Bridgeport’s only scoring inning came in the seventh when the Bluefish totaled five runs. Rossmel Perez and Jose Cuevas doubled in the inning, while Dan Johnson drove in a pair. Ducks reliever Jarrett Casey entered in place of Brownell to finish the inning. Casey, Frank DeJiulio Jr., and Patrick Crider combined to close out the game.
All nine Ducks recorded hits including Lew Ford, who hit his team-leading fifth home run of the season. Both Fehlandt Lentini and Mike Dowd had triples.
With last night’s results (Ducks win and Patriots loss) and another loss by the Patriots on Thursday afternoon, Long Island and Somerset are now tied for first place in the Liberty Division standings. The Ducks have two games in hand as well.
ON THE MOUND: Darin Downs toes the rubber to face Bridgeport for the second time. Downs’ most recent performance, an eight-inning gem with 11 strikeouts in a 9-3 win at Somerset, came on May 20. The left-hander out of Lake Worth, Fla. owns a 3-1 record with 3.02 ERA. Downs currently ranks third in the Atlantic League with 38 strikeouts and sits tied for second in the league with three victories. On May 8 at Bridgeport, Downs grabbed his first win of the season over five innings. He allowed just three hits and two runs over five innings in Long Island’s 9-4 win.
Bridgeport’s Jimmy Patterson makes his sixth start and seventh appearance of the year. Patterson has been in a starting role this season for Bridgeport after seeing action mainly as a reliever in 2015. The former Tampa Bay draft pick is 0-1 with a 2.84 ERA. Despite giving up just four runs in his past three starts combined, Bridgeport has only scored five total runs in those games.
