Game 30: Ducks vs. Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark (Bridgewater, NJ)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (18-11) play the second of a three game set against the Liberty Division rival Somerset Patriots (19-11).
THURSDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks defeated the Patriots by a score of 11-9 at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday night.
The Patriots and the Ducks traded scoring early on, but in the top of the fourth, the Ducks were able to gain an advantage. Ruben Gotay doubled off of Patriots starter Jeremy Horst, to score Matt Wessinger, and came in on the next at-bat, a double from Lew Ford. Things took a tough turn in the bottom of the fourth though, as the Patriots would use two home runs, a three-run blast from Brad Snyder, and a solo shot from Carlos Guzman to take a 6-4 lead. They added another run in the fifth as Bryan LaHair hit a sacrifice fly to score Aharon Eggleston.
The Ducks scored two in the top of the seventh to cut the lead to one. Mike Blanke continued his hot hitting with a two-run double that scored Sean Burroughs and Cody Puckett. The floodgates opened in the ninth for the Ducks, as Puckett would drive in Gotay with a single to left field, Mike Blanke doubled to score Burroughs and Puckett, and Wessinger doubled to score Blanke and Blake Tekotte.
Ducks reliever Amalio Diaz (2-1) earned the win with a clean eighth inning highlighted by two strikeouts. Patriots closer Jon Hunton (0-2) took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits, no walks, and one strikeout.
ON THE MOUND: Jack Snodgrass (3-2, 4.22 ERA) toes the rubber for the Ducks as they try to sweep the Patriots on their home turf. Snodgrass has been good this season, sitting in second place in the Atlantic League in strikeouts by a pitcher, behind teammate Darin Downs. He’s made two starts against the Patriots this season. Combined, the big lefty is 1-1, having thrown 10.0 innings, allowing just four runs on nine hits, two walks, and 17 strikeouts.
Darin Gorski (1-1, 5.81) gets the nod from the Patriots. Gorski has allowed four or more runs in two of his last three starts. He has also faced Long Island twice before. Combined, he is 0-1 in 10.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs on nine hits and five walks, with 10 strikeouts.
