Game 23: Ducks vs. Blue Crabs
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (14-8) of the Liberty Division play the finale of a four-game set against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (6-17) of the Freedom Division.
SATURDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks used the long ball to win game one of a day/night double header against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 9-5, and the second game 9-2.
The Ducks almost doubled their season home run count with seven between the two games on a warm day at Bethpage Ballpark. Down 4-0 early in game one, Dan Lyons homered off of Southern Maryland starter Shaun Garceau to deep left to put the Ducks on the board, making the score 4-1. Lew Ford came up in the third and hit a three run shot that tied the game at four. The ball would keep rolling as Cody Puckett came to the plate and hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth, and Fehlandt Lentini would hit a line drive two-out home run to left in the sixth.
Bruce Kern was good, fighting through a tough Blue Crabs offense that scored four (all unearned) runs in the top of the first. Kern would continue to battle, keeping the Blue Crabs off the board until the fifth inning when Blue Crabs outfielder Jamar Walton hit a solo home run. Kern pitched four and two-thirds innings allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits, no walks, and six strikeouts.
Game two saw more of the same for the Flock, as three home runs would be hit in the 9-2 victory to sweep the doubleheader. Scoring started early as Lentini scored on a base hit by Ford off of Blue Crabs starter Tim Sexton. Then, in the bottom of the second inning, Blake Tekotte hit a lead-off home run, his first of the season, to make the score 2-0. Two innings later, Anthony Vega hit a long three-run homer to straightaway right field, also his first of the season. Lyons came to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and hit his second home run of the day, a solo shot.
Darin Downs pitched well, as he was able to go seven complete innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, no walks, and eight strikeouts. It was the first time since 2011 that Downs had managed to strike out eight in a single game. The Ducks came into Saturday with eight home runs on the season. They nearly doubled it, and now have 15 on the season.
ON THE MOUND: Bobby Blevins will start for the Ducks this afternoon. Blevins has a 1-1 record so far this season with a 3.48 ERA. His win came on April 28 as part of the first series against the Blue Crabs. He pitched five complete innings, giving up three runs (one earned), on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts. He picked up his loss in his most recent start against the Somerset Patriots, in which he pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks, with four strikeouts.
Southern Maryland counters with Brian Burres. Burres comes into this game with a 1-2 record and a 3.43 ERA. The lefty picked up his first win of the season in his most recent start on the road against the Lancaster Barnstormers. He pitched five complete innings allowing only one run on three hits and four walks with three strikeouts. This is the first time the Ducks will face Burres this season.
