Games 21 and 22: Ducks vs Blue Crabs

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:05 p.m. and 6: 35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (12-8) of the Liberty Division play a day/night double-header as part of a four-game set against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (6-15) of the Freedom Division.

FRIDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks defeated the Blue Crabs 7-5 despite a challenging rally by Southern Maryland in the later innings.

The Ducks scored early in this one, as they were able to bring in five runs in the first two innings. After Fehlandt Lentini’s leadoff walk to start the bottom of the first for the Ducks, Dan Lyons hit an RBI triple off of Blue Crabs starter Scott Snodgress to score him. Lyons himself would score on the next at-bat, an RBI groundout from Lew Ford. In the second, Lentini came up again and hit an RBI single to score Anthony Vega. Lyons came back up a hit a booming fly ball that was misplayed by left fielder to score Lentini and Matt Wessinger.

John Brownell was triumphant in his return to the mound for the Ducks, not allowing a hit until the sixth inning, when Gary Brown hit a double to left field. Brownell got into trouble in the seventh though, as four runs came across in the inning, with three of them (two earned) charged to the Ducks righty. The Blue Crabs would not get much more though, as Todd Coffey would come in to pitch the ninth inning. Three outs later, the game was over.

ON THE MOUND: Bruce Kern will go for the Ducks in game one of the double header. Kern has been good this season, mostly pitching out of the bullpen. He is fresh off his first start of the season, in which he pitched three innings for the Flock. The Yaphank native has been solid out of the bullpen, making three appearances, all scoreless, giving up one hit, two walks, and striking out three.

Kern goes up against Shaun Garceau for Southern Maryland. In four games (three starts), Garceau has on win and one loss, a 4.32 ERA, four walks, and 11 strikeouts in 16.2 innings pitched. He got his first win of the season against the York Revolution on May 8.

The night game will feature Darin Downs for the Ducks. In four starts, Downs has a 3.48 ERA with 13 walks and 19 strikeouts. Against the Lancaster Barnstormers on May 3, Downs pitched six innings of one-run (unearned) ball. He got his first win of the season against the Bridgeport Bluefish on May 8.

Downs will face Blue Crabs right-hander Tim Sexton, who has been sharp in his last three appearances, including a start against the Revolution on May 7. He pitched four and one-third innings, giving up one run on four hits and one walk, with three strikeouts.
