GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:05 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (11-8) of the Liberty Division begin a four-game set against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (6-14) of the Freedom Division. The Ducks and Blue Crabs have already met once this season, with the Flock taking all three of the set spanning from April 28-30.

THURSDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks fell in the final game of the three-game series against the Somerset Patriots last night by a score of 8-1.

After falling into a 2-0 deficit early, the Ducks came into the bottom of the third inning needing to get the offense going. The rally started with Anthony Vega hit an infield single to second base with one away. Matt Wessenger was up next, and on the very first pitch he saw, he hit a double into the gap in right field. Vega scored, cutting the Patriots lead in half.

That would be the only offense for the Ducks though, as Somerset right-hander Scott McGregor (2-1) was given the win, retiring the next 20 out of 21 hitters to complete the game. The offense for the Blue Crabs was strong against Ducks righty Mark Blackmar (2-1), and was highlighted by the efforts of Bryan LaHair and David Vidal. LaHair hit leadoff solo home runs in the second and eighth innings. Vidal also hit two two-run home runs, one in the fourth and one in the sixth, both coming after Carlos Guzman walked. Blackmar was given the loss, only going four and two-thirds innings, giving up four runs on four hits and four walks, with one strikeout.

ON THE MOUND: John Brownell returns to the mound tonight to face the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs for the first time this season. Brownell comes into this game without a decision, but a promising 3.27 ERA. The veteran, and one of the mainstays for the Ducks, has done well against the Blue Crabs, pitching in two games, pitching a total of fourteen and one-third innings with a 3.77 ERA. Last year, the righty set a franchise record with 146 strikeouts, leading the Atlantic League, and won the 2015 Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year Award.

Southern Maryland counters with left-hander Scott Snodgress (0-1). The 6-6, 225 pounder is coming off his best start of the season, in which he pitched six complete innings for the first time this season. He comes to Long Island with a 6.23 ERA. In his first two starts of the 2016 season, the Glendale, Arizona native gave up eight runs, all earned, and in a total of seven innings pitched.
