Game 19: Ducks vs. Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (11-7) look to take two out of three against the Somerset Patriots (15-5) in the final game of a three-game series. It is the seventh time these two teams have met in 2016 with Somerset holding a 5-1 record to this point.
WEDNESDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks won their first game in the season series against the Patriots last night by a score of 1-0. The Flock only needed one run to defeat the Patriots, as Jack Snodgrass pitched the best game of his professional career. The Ducks lefty pitched six complete innings, allowing only two singles and one walk, while striking out a career-high 12 hitters. Snodgrass was awarded the win, while Somerset’s Darin Gorski was given the loss, allowing only one run in the bottom of the second inning. Todd Coffey picked up his third save of the season.
With the pitching was as strong as it was, it only took one run to decide the winner. That run came in the bottom of the second inning, in a rally that was started by a leadoff single from Sean Burroughs. Cody Puckett then flew out to deep center field, and Sean Burroughs capitalized and took second base. Blake Tekotte grounded out to shortstop, and it looked as if the Ducks would have to wait until the third to get some scoring done. Then Ducks catcher Mike Blanke took an 0-1 pitch and singled to left field, which allowed Burroughs to score. That run turned out to be the difference maker in the Ducks’ win.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks rotation has been very good this season, not just because of Jack Snodgrass, but also because of Mark Blackmar, who gets the start tonight. The 23-year old has been great for the Flock, as he is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA in four starts. He has only given up one run, which was against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on April 30. He went six full innings without a decision in that game. His best start this season is also his most recent start. At Bridgeport, the Texas native pitched seven shutout innings, giving up only two hits, while striking out seven.
Somerset gives the nod to Scott McGregor tonight. The tall righty has also been strong for the Patriots. His lone win came against the Ducks on April 24 in the opening series of the season, in which he went five full innings allowing one run on four hits and no walks while striking out five. His best start was his next one against the Lancaster Barnstormers on April 30, when he pitched into the seventh, going six and two thirds total innings, allowing n1o runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts. In McGregor’s last start, he allowed four runs in six innings, earning the loss against the Sugar Land Skeeters.
