Game 18: Ducks vs. Patriots

_E6I2376

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (10-7) look to gain ground on their main competition for the Liberty League Championship, the Somerset Patriots (15-4) in the second game of a three-game series. It is the sixth time these two teams have met, with Somerset winning all five games to this point.

TUESDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks faced a familiar challenge, but once again fell to the Patriots in game one of the three-game set by a score of 4-1. Jeremy Horst (2-0) picked up the win for the Patriots, while Bobby Blevins (1-1) was handed the loss for the Ducks. Jon Hunton, the former Duck, set the Atlantic League record in saves with the 135th of his career.

Bobby Blevins got the start for the Flock, and seemed very strong to start the game. Things were different in the top of the third, however. Eric Farris singled, and Rob Kral doubled to start the inning. Patriots’ shortstop Scott Kelly then drove them both in with another double. Somerset would pick up one more run in the fifth and sixth, respectively. Blevins pitched five and two-thirds innings, giving up seven hits and four runs, walking two, and striking out four, matching his season-high.

Jeremy Horst was very good in his start for the Patriots, giving up only three hits in six full innings. He didn’t give up a Ducks hit until the bottom of the fourth inning, but he retired the next three in a row. The leadoff man would reach in the next two innings as well, but both times, Horst was able to get the Patriots back in the dugout with no harm done. The only offense that the Ducks could muster was a solo home run from Mike Blanke in the seventh inning. In the eighth, back-to-back two-out singles by Lew Ford and Sean Burroughs, plus Cody Puckett getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases, but Blake Tekotte got under one, and hit it to center field, where Vinny Zarillo was able to make the play and end the threat.

ON THE MOUND: Jack Snodgrass gets the nod for the Flock tonight. He has been very impressive lately, pitching six complete innings in both of his last two starts. His last start was against Lancaster in game two of a single admission double-header. In the six innings he pitched, he allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out seven. The offense has been very strong while Snodgrass has been on the mound. In his last two starts, Snodgrass has gotten a total of 23 runs to work with.

Somerset will counter with Darin Gorski, who is not doing very well to start the season for the Patriots. His most recent start came against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. He pitched five and two-thirds innings, but he gave up a big six-run second inning that forced the Somerset offense to come from behind to win the game. He gave up one more run in the top of the sixth, after which he was pulled from the game.
