Game 17: Ducks vs. Patriots

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (10-6) fight for their 10th straight victory against the Somerset Patriots (14-4) in the first of a three game set. It is the fifth matchup between the two teams this season, as Somerset swept the Ducks in the opening four-game series of the 2016 season.

SUNDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks defeated the rival Bridgeport Bluefish 9-4 on Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three game set at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard.

The Ducks offense continued it’s torrid pace, picking up 11 hits along the way. Anthony Vega had his best game of the season, getting the ball rolling for the Flock with an RBI triple that scored Cody Puckett in the top of the second. Vega came up in the seventh, and singled to drive in two more for the Ducks, and then doubled in the eighth to drive in Puckett. Vega went 3-3 with two walks, one run, and four RBI. He finished the day a home run shy of the cycle.

Darin Downs picked up the win, pitching five solid innings for the Ducks. He only gave up three hits, two runs, and two walks, while striking out two. The Ducks bullpen was once again solid. Led by Frank Dejiulio Jr., Eury De La Rosa, and James Lomangino, the ‘pen pitched four innings, giving up only two runs on five hits, three walks, and stuck out three.

Bluefish starter R.J. Hively (0-2) was competitive in the losing effort, throwing 105 pitches. The defense was another story. Five errors by the ‘Fish knocked Hively out of the game after 5.1 innings, giving up only four hits and five runs (three earned), three walks, and four strikeouts.

ON THE MOUND: Bobby Blevins (1-0) will pitch in the series opener for Long Island. Blevins was excellent in his most recent start against the Lancaster Barnstormers on May 5. He pitched six full innings for the Flock, without giving up a run on four hits and no walks, while striking out four. He did not get a decision in the game, which was won in the bottom of the seventh on a walkoff walk by Mike Blanke. Blevins has already faced Somerset in the opening series this season. He did not pick up a decision, and pitched four complete innings, allowing four runs (three earned), on seven hits, no walks, and three strikeouts.

Somerset will counter with Jeremy Horst, who is also pitching very well this season. His lone win also came against Lancaster, as the lefty pitched into the seventh inning, allowing only one run on four hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. His most recent start was not as glamorous, but he still pitched into the sixth inning, giving up only two runs on eight hits and one walk, with no strikeouts. He has faced Long Island once already this season, and pitched five complete innings, allowing just one run on six hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
