GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:12 p.m. at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard (Bridgeport, Conn.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (8-6) go for their eighth consecutive win when they take on the cross-sound rival Bridgeport Bluefish (5-10) in the middle game of a three-game series. It’s also the second game of the 2016 Ferry Cup Series. The Ducks lead the series one game to none.

YESTERDAY’S RESULTS: Long Island opened up the eighth chapter of the Ferry Cup Series with a 5-1 win in Bridgeport. The story of the series-opener was Ducks starter Mark Blackmar (2-0). The right-hander retired the first 13 batters he faced before Luis Rodriguez broke up his perfect game bid with a single in the fifth inning. He would allow just one more single from that point on, to Jose Cuevas in the seventh. Blackmar finished with seven inning of scoreless baseball and struck out seven batters without walking one.

The Ducks threatened in each of the first four innings against Bluefish starter David Anderson (0-1). They opened the scoring in the second on Blake Tekotte’s RBI double and added two more in the fourth on a booming double from Mike Dowd and a two-out RBI single from Lew Ford. However, Long Island also left eight men on base during those four innings, keeping Bridgeport in the game.

Dan Blewett came in to pitch the eighth and allowed three singles, including a two-out RBI base hit from Ruben Sosa Jr. He would settle down though to retire Wilkin Ramirez and end the inning. Long Island answered with a two-out rally in the ninth to put the game out of reach. Nate Freiman, who finished with three hits, singled to start it, and Sean Burroughs followed with a 12-pitch at-bat that ended in a walk. Cody Puckett followed with a RBI single, and Burroughs scored on the play when Rodriguez’s throw to third hit off of Burroughs and ricocheted away down the third base line. Amalio Diaz closed the game out with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth.

ON THE MOUND: Right-hander Bruce Kern has been tasked with his first start of the 2016 season. The Long Island native has made three relief appearances this season, yielding just one hit and two walks while striking out three in two scoreless innings. In 2015, he spent time as both a starter and reliever for the Flock, making 40 appearances (13 starts). Kern finished the year 9-6 overall with a 3.51 ERA and was 4-5 with a 4.32 ERA as a starter. Against the Bluefish in 2015, he was 2-1 with a 4.19 ERA in nine games (two starts). This offseason, he was signed by the Kansas City Royals and pitched with the club in spring training.

Bridgeport will counter with Mike Antonini, who is making his fourth start of the season. The left-hander enters with a 1-2 record and a 5.26 ERA, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on 14 hits and six walks while striking out six over 13 and two-thirds innings. His last start came on Monday at York when he gave up four runs on six hits over four innings with a walk and no strikeouts in a 4-1 loss. Tonight will be his first start at home this season. Antonini pitched four scoreless innings against the Ducks in spring training and posted a 1-2 record with a 2.46 ERA in three starts against the Ducks in 2015.
