Game 9: Ducks vs. Blue Crabs
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (2-6) host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (2-6) in the second game of a four-game series and second meeting of 2016. The Ducks lead the season series one game to none.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks earned their 10th win in 17 seasons on Opening Night at home, defeating the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 6-4. Long Island pounded out 12 hits in the game as well, marking their highest run and hit totals in a game this season. Following a road trip where the Ducks often struggled to come up with timely hits, they found a way to collect five of their six runs with two outs on Thursday.
With the score tied at one in the bottom of the second, Delta Cleary Jr. connected for a two-out, two-run double to right-center that put the Ducks in front 3-1. Southern Maryland quickly tied the game in the third with a pair of unearned runs, one of which scored on a dropped fly ball in right field by Blake Barber. However, Long Island answered in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles by Cody Puckett and Mike Blanke to go in front 5-3. A wild pitch in the seventh brought the Blue Crabs to within one, but that was as close as they’d come. Sean Burroughs’ two-out RBI infield single in the eighth put the game out of reach at 6-4.
Bobby Blevins (1-0) picked up his first win of the year with five innings of work. He allowed three runs, just one earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out three. On the other side, Jon Leicester (0-2) took the loss after getting roughed up for five runs in four and two-thirds innings. The former big leaguer allowed seven hits and four walks while striking out two. Four Long Island relievers combined to allow just one run over four innings of relief, with Todd Coffey picking up the save after a scoreless ninth.
ON THE MOUND: In a matchup that can be filed under “you can’t make this stuff up,” the Ducks will send left-hander Jack Snodgrass to the mound against Blue Crabs lefty Scott Snodgress. Long Island’s starter suffered a loss in his first outing of the season this past Sunday at Somerset. He allowed four runs on seven hits in just four innings, walking one and striking out five. Snodgrass was one strike away from getting out of the first inning unharmed, but he allowed a two-run home run to Matt Fields. Three batters later, Scott Kelly’s RBI single put the Ducks in a three-run hole. The 28-year-old is in his first season with the Flock after five years in the San Francisco Giants organization.
Snodgress took a no-decision in his first outing of 2016 but also struggled. Last Saturday against Lancaster, he only lasted three and two-thirds innings and surrendered three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out just one. He also had trouble in the first inning, putting the Blue Crabs in an early 2-0 hole. The southpaw is in his first season with Southern Maryland after pitching at Double-A and Triple-A in the Los Angeles Angels organization a year ago. He combined to go 1-1 with a 9.62 ERA in 33 games (one start). In 2014, he made four appearances in the Major Leagues with the Chicago White Sox and allowed seven runs (four earned) in two and one-third innings.
