Game 8: Ducks vs. Blue Crabs – Home Opener!
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip. NY)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: In the 2016 Home Opener, the Long Island Ducks host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs in the first game of a four-game series and first meeting of 2016.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The New Britain Bees won the very first series against the Ducks with a 5-2 victory. Darin Downs took the loss, going four and two-thirds innings, allowing seven hits, five runs and five walks with four strikeouts. Nick Greenwood went six full innings on the mound, giving up only five hits and two walks while striking out five. The Bees scored three runs in the bottom of the third and added single runs in the fourth and fifth.
The Ducks were able to start rallies in the later innings, bringing home single runs in the seventh and ninth. Lew Ford fouled off a couple of tough pitches before working a bases-loaded walk in the top of the seventh to score Anthony Vega. In the ninth, Fehlandt Lentini brought in Vega with a groundout, but it proved to be too late as Delta Cleary Jr. popped out to end the game. The Ducks bullpen was dominant in defeat though. In the three and one-third innings that the relievers pitched, the Bees were only able to muster one hit while striking out eight times. Eury De La Rosa struck out the side in the eighth inning.
ON THE MOUND: Bobby Blevins starts on the mound for the Ducks. Blevins went four innings in his first start of the season at Somerset on Saturday, giving up seven hits and striking out three. He took a no-decision in Long Island’s 6-5 loss in 10 innings. The righty started the 2015 season in the Chinese Professional Baseball League with Brother Elephants. After joining the Ducks, he went 4-4 with a 3.82 ERA in 15 games (14 starts) and 89 and one-third innings pitched.
Jon Leicester takes the hill for the Blue Crabs. Leicester pitched into the fifth inning of his first start against the Lancaster Barnstormers. He went four and one-third innings, giving up two runs (one earned), four hits and one walk while striking out four. He started the season with Southern Maryland in 2015, but his contract was purchased by the Mexican League on June 20th. While there, he went 3-3 with a 5.03 ERA in eight games. He made his return to the Blue Crabs on September 1, and in the 2015 postseason, he went 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA.
