Game 7: Ducks at Bees
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 10:35 a.m. at New Britain Stadium (New Britain, Conn.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks (1-5) visit the New Britain Bees (2-4) for the final game of a three-game series and third meeting of 2016. The season series is tied at one game apiece.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: On a night where the game time temperature hovered around 40 degrees, Long Island’s offense was limited to just one run on three hits in a 2-1 loss to New Britain in 11 innings. The Ducks opened the scoring with back-to-back two-out singles in the first, including a RBI base hit by Sean Burroughs. However, Anthony Hewitt tied the game in the bottom of the second with a solo homer to left-center field, his second of the season.
Both starters would settle in after the early hiccup, with each throwing six innings of one-run ball. John Brownell allowed six hits and three walks while striking out six, while Josh Outman gave up three hits and two walks with five strikeouts. The Ducks bullpen held the Bees scoreless for the next four innings, but Kevin Vance allowed a walk and a single with two outs in the 11th before Greg Golson blooped the game-winning hit down the right field line. Bees relievers retired all 15 batters that they faced over the final five innings of the game, striking out five.
ON THE MOUND: Darin Downs toes the rubber for the Ducks in the rubber game of the three-game set. The left-hander pitched well in his first start on Friday at Somerset, allowing just one run over five innings on four hits and two walks while striking out six. The only run he surrendered came on a groundout by Bryan LaHair in the fifth inning, and he left with the game tied at one. Downs is 4-5 with a 3.72 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 72 and two-thirds innings as a member of the Ducks.
New Britain will counter with former big leaguer Nick Greenwood. The southpaw earned the first win in Bees history on Friday against the York Revolution, tossing six scoreless innings. He allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out seven, throwing 57 of his 78 pitches for strikes. The 28-year-old received only one run of support, a third inning sac fly by Jon Jones, but it was enough for the victory. Greenwood combined to make 20 appearances (one start) in the Majors with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2014 and 2015, going 2-2 with a 5.25 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 36 innings. He spent most of 2015 with Triple-A Memphis, posting a 13-6 record with a 5.79 ERA in 32 games (22 starts).
