Game 6: Ducks at Bees
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 6:35 p.m. at New Britain Stadium (New Britain, Conn.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks visit the New Britain Bees for the second game of a four-game series and second meeting of 2016. The Ducks lead the season series one game to none.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: The Ducks earned their first victory of the 2016 season with a 5-2 triumph over the Bees in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs. Both sides engaged in a pitcher’s duel over the first five innings. Ducks starter Mark Blackmar, who earned the win, allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out three, while Bees starter Kyle Simon gave up just one hit and one walk with four strikeouts.
Long Island was able to break through in the sixth against knuckleballer Colin Moberly, who took the loss. Following a double by Delta Cleary Jr. and an infield single from Lew Ford, Moberly uncorked a wild pitch that plated the game’s first run. Blake Tekotte followed with a walk before Dan Lyons drove in a pair with a double down the left field line. Mike Blanke’s sac fly scored Tekotte for the fourth run. Two innings later, a two-out RBI single by Fehlandt Lentini capped Long Island’s scoring.
The Bees tried to rally, as they scored a run in the eighth (sac fly by Kevin Rivers) and ninth (RBI double by Jonathan Roof), but Todd Coffey induced a groundout from Jon Jones and struck out Craig Maddox to preserve the win.
ON THE MOUND: John Brownell returns to the mound for his second start of the season. The right-hander took a no-decision on Opening Night in Somerset, allowing three runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out four over five innings. The Ducks had spotted him an early 3-0 lead, but he surrendered two runs in the second and one in the third. After leaving with the score tied at three, the Patriots scored six runs off the bullpen to earn the win. Brownell, the defending Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year, is coming off a season where he led the league in wins (12), innings pitched (175.2), strikeouts (146), complete games (4) and shutouts (2).
Josh Outman, who started the Bees’ inaugural game last Thursday, will take the mound for the hosts. The southpaw lasted five innings against the York Revolution, yielding three runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings. He also walked five batters while striking out four and took the loss in a 4-3 defeat. Outman comes to New Britain with six seasons of Major League experience, spending time with the Athletics, Rockies, Indians and Yankees. In 161 games (32 starts), he compiled a 16-11 record with a 4.43 ERA. The St. Louis native pitched with the Braves organization in 2015 and went 0-1 with a 1.04 ERA in nine games (two starts) across four levels.
