Game 4: Ducks at Patriots

GAME TIME/LOCATION: 1:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark (Bridgewater, N.J.)

TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks take on the Somerset Patriots in the final game of a four-game series and the fourth game of the 2016 season. Following the game, the team will head to New Britain, Connecticut where they will open a three-game set with the Atlantic League’s newest franchise, the New Britain Bees, on Monday evening.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: In a playoff-like battle, the Ducks were unable to overcome to the Patriots, falling 6-5 in 10 innings. After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Ducks rallied to take a 3-2 lead on Cody Puckett’s two-run homer to left in the second, Long Island’s first longball of the year, and Lew Ford’s mammoth solo blast to left in the third. However, the Patriots re-took the lead in the fourth on Carlos Guzman’s solo homer to center and a run-scoring groundout by Rob Kral.

Long Island got the lead back though two innings later, as Mike Dowd’s two-run single followed back-to-back doubles by Blake Tekotte, who had three in the game, and Puckett. Still, the 5-4 lead wasn’t enough. David Vidal homered to left-center leading off the bottom of the frame to even the score at five. Both sides had several opportunities to take the lead for good, but neither would until the bottom of the 10th. Following a walk to open the inning and then two intentional walks with one out and a runner at third, Nick Struck induced a foul pop up for the second out if the inning. He was able to get ahead of Kral, but the Patriots catcher fouled off three two-strike pitches to keep the at-bat alive. The next pitch was lined to left-center for the game-winning hit.

ON THE MOUND: Jack Snodgrass makes his regular season debut for the Ducks. The left-hander comes to Long Island after spending the previous five seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization. In 2015, he combined to make 17 appearances (11 starts) with Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento, posting a record of 5-5 with a 4.35 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 72 and one-third innings. The year prior, he was named a Mid-Season All-Star with Richmond, and in 2013, he was selected as both a Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star for Richmond.

Scott McGregor will oppose Snodgrass for Somerset. The right-hander is also making his Patriots debut after spending parts of six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals organization and the past two in the Washington Nationals system. He pitched with Triple-A Syracuse for all of 2015 and was 6-6 with a 4.04 ERA and one save in 27 games (15 starts). McGregor posted career-highs in innings pitched (148.2), strikeouts (115) and starts (25) while going 10-11 with a 4.06 ERA in 2013 with Double-A Springfield and Triple-A Memphis in the Cardinals organization.
