Game 3: Ducks at Patriots
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark (Bridgewater, N.J.)
TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks take on the Somerset Patriots in the third game of a four-game series and the third game of the 2016 season.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: For a second consecutive night, the Ducks took an early lead but saw the Patriots rally to tie the game and later take the lead with a big inning against Long Island’s bullpen. Sean Burroughs opened the scoring with a run-scoring infield single in the first inning. Darin Downs kept the Patriots at bay through the first four innings, but they scratched out a run against him in the fifth on Bryan LaHair’s RBI groundout.
Nick Struck took after five solid innings from Downs and retired the first two batters he faced in the sixth. However, Mycal Jones worked out a walk on eight pitches and then stole second base. Scott Kelly followed with a RBI single to give Somerset the lead, and after a single by Yovan Gonzalez, Trayvon Robinson hit Struck’s first pitch for a three-run homer to center field. Gus Schlosser, who earned the win, Jeremy McBryde and Jon Hunton combined to allow just one run over the final four innings of the game to give Somerset the victory.
ON THE MOUND: Bobby Blevins makes his first start of the season for the Ducks. Last year, he joined Long Island in June after beginning the season with Brother Elephants in the Chinese Professional Baseball League. In 15 games (14 starts) with the Ducks, he went 4-4 with a 3.82 ERA and 67 strikeouts to just 11 walks over 89 and one-third innings. The right-hander has spent parts of four seasons with the Ducks, including all of 2014, and has compiled a 15-10 record with a 3.23 ERA and 212 strikeouts to just 55 walks in 50 games (47 starts).
The Patriots will start a left-hander for the second consecutive game in Darin Gorski. He joins Somerset after spending the past seven seasons in the New York Mets organization, reaching Triple-A Las Vegas in each of the past three years. The 28-year-old spent all of 2015 with Las Vegas and posted a 10-8 record with a 5.52 ERA in 28 games (27 starts). He also struck out 108 batters in 137 innings but walked 69 as well. Gorski was originally drafted by the Mets in the seventh round of the 2009 amateur draft.
