GAME TIME/LOCATION: 7:05 p.m. at TD Bank Ballpark (Bridgewater, N.J.)

TONIGHT’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks take on the Somerset Patriots in the second game of a four-game series and the second game of the 2016 season.

YESTERDAY’S RESULT: Somerset claimed the opening game of the season with a 9-3 victory over Long Island. The Ducks struck for three two-out runs in the first inning thanks to Dan Lyons’ RBI single up the middle and a two-run double to right by newcomer Blake Tekotte. However, the Patriots tied the game with two runs in the second on Eric Farris’ run-scoring fielder’s choice and Mycal Jones’ RBI triple along with Aharon Eggleston’s solo homer to right in the third.

John Brownell pitched five innings of three-run ball for the Ducks, allowing eight hits and a walk while striking out three, while Mickey Storey lasted four innings of Somerset, giving up seven hits and three runs with two strikeouts. Following three scoreless inning from reliever Efrain Nieves, who earned the win, the game turned in the bottom of the seventh. Somerset plated five runs against Eury De La Rosa, who suffered the loss, and Kevin Vance with three hits, two walks, and a bases loaded hit by pitch. An unearned run in the eighth rounded out the scoring.

ON THE MOUND: Darin Downs will take the mound for Long Island in his first start of the year. In 2015, he made 12 starts with the Ducks and posted 4-5 record with a 3.85 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 67 and two-thirds innings. His last start of 2015 game in Game Two of the Liberty Division Championship Series when he threw seven scoreless innings, yielding just two hits and two walks while striking out seven. Though he took a no-decision, the Ducks won the game 5-4. During the regular season, the former big leaguer made three starts against the Patriots, going 0-2 with a 6.19 ERA.

Somerset will send left-hander Jeremy Horst to the mound, as he makes his first start in a Patriots uniform. The southpaw comes in with three seasons of Major League experience as a member of the Reds (2011) and Phillies (2012-13). While there, he compiled a 2-2 record with a 3.34 ERA in 72 games of relief. Horst spent the 2015 season at Double A with the Dodgers and both Double-A and Triple-A with the Brewers, combining for a 1-3 record, a 2.39 ERA and 10 saves in 51 games. Horst last started in 2014 with Lehigh Valley (AAA, Phillies) where he made three starts, and he has not been a full-time starter since 2009 when he was pitching with the Reds organization.
