Spring Training Home Game 3: Ducks vs. Black Sox
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 12:00 P.M. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks play their third and final home game of 2016 spring training when they host the semi-pro Long Island Black Sox in the second of back-to-back games. This also marks the final game the Ducks will play during the exhibition season before beginning the regular season on Thursday, April 21. Last year, the Ducks won both games against the Black Sox by scores of 13-3 and 6-0.
YESTERDAY’S RESULT: In the opener of back-to-back games against the Black Sox, the Ducks tallied 10 runs on 13 hits in a 10-1 rout. Long Island jumped out to an early 6-0 lead against former Duck Chris McCoy with four runs in the first inning and two more in the second. Cody Puckett’s two-run single, a sacrifice fly from Sean Burroughs and three Black Sox errors highlighted the early going. Following a Black Sox run in the third, the Ducks increased their lead to 7-1 in the sixth on a sac fly off the bat of Matt Wessinger. Three more runs in the eighth on RBI singles by Anthony Vega, Delta Cleary Jr. and spring training tryout Joey Falcone rounded out the scoring.
Jack Snodgrass started and pitched four strong innings, yielding just one unearned run on four hits while striking out one. Five other Ducks appeared in relief (Jarrett Casey, Patrick Crider, Nick Struck, Kevin Vance and Todd Coffey) and combined to allow just five hits and one walk over five innings while striking out nine batters.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks will send Mark Blackmar to the mound for the first time. The right-hander comes to Long Island after pitching in the White Sox organization in 2015. He made a career-high 26 starts with Double-A Birmingham and went 6-8 with a 3.63 ERA over 151 and one-third innings pitched. The previous four years were spent with the Baltimore Orioles organization. The 23-year-old is 27-21 in his career with a 3.71 ERA and 240 strikeouts in 100 games (62 starts).
The Black Sox will send a familiar face to the mound in former Ducks righty Matt Soren. The Roslyn native made the Ducks roster out of spring training a year ago and went on to pitch in 12 games for the Flock but struggled, going 0-2 with a 6.17 ERA. He was eventually released by the team on July 24.
Here are the other pitchers scheduled to toe the rubber for the Flock today:
RHP James Lomangino
RHP Frank DeJiulio Jr.
LHP Eury De La Rosa
RHP Dan Blewett
RHP Amalio Diaz
