Spring Training Home Game 2: Ducks vs. Black Sox
GAME TIME/LOCATION: 12:00 P.M. at Bethpage Ballpark (Central Islip, N.Y.)
TODAY’S MATCHUP: The Long Island Ducks play their second home game of 2016 spring training when they host the semi-pro Long Island Black Sox in the first of back-to-back games. This marks the second of three games the Ducks will host during the exhibition season before beginning the regular season on Thursday, April 21. Last year, the Ducks won both games against the Black Sox by scores of 13-3 and 6-0.
SATURDAY’S RESULT: In the first home game of their preseason slate, the Ducks were defeated in the back end of a home-and-home series with the Bridgeport Bluefish 6-2. John Brownell, who was named the Opening Night starter by manager Kevin Baez, started the game and threw four hitless innings, allowing just one walk while striking out three. Cody Puckett opened the scoring in the second inning with a RBI fielder’s choice to put the Ducks in front 1-0. Sean Burroughs rounded it out with a run-scoring single to left-center in the eighth. Bridgeport’s offense was fueled by a two-run fifth and a three-run sixth off of Ducks starter Darin Downs. RBI singles by Endy Chavez, Carlos Sosa and Jiwan James highlighted the scoring. A run-scoring single by Ruben Sosa Jr. in the eighth capped their offense. Amalio Diaz allowed a run in one inning of relief, while Todd Coffey pitched a scoreless ninth for Long Island.
ON THE MOUND: The Ducks will get their first look at left-handed pitcher Jack Snodgrass, who is scheduled to throw four innings. The 28-year-old spent five seasons in the San Francisco Giants organization and reached as high as Triple-A. He went 5-5 with a 4.35 ERA in 17 games (11 starts). The 6-foot-6-inch starter earned Eastern League Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star honors in 2013 with Double-A Richmond and was a Mid-Season All-Star as well in 2014 with Richmond and 2012 with Advanced-A San Jose. Overall, Snodgrass has a career record of 42-24 with a 4.00 ERA and 350 strikeouts in 112 games (88 starts).
The Black Sox will counter with right-hander Chris McCoy. The former Duck has spent parts of seven seasons with the Flock dating back to the inaugural 2000 season. As a member of the Ducks, he has compiled 19-21 record with a 5.01 ERA in 143 games (28 starts).
Here are the other pitchers scheduled to toe the rubber for the Flock today:
RHP Jarrett Casey
LHP Patrick Crider
