Games 132 and 133: Ducks vs. Skeeters

Zapata

For the second time in a week, the Ducks had a ballgame cancelled due to rain. After Thursday’s cancellation in Camden, Long Island and Sugar Land were unable to get in Saturday’s contest at Bethpage Ballpark before the rain became too heavy. As a result, the Ducks and Skeeters will now play a pair of seven-inning games on Sunday, the final two home games of the 2015 regular season for Long Island.

After a one hour and three minute rain delay, the Ducks and Skeeters attempted to play the middle game of two at the Duck Pond last night. Darin Downs was on the mound for Long Island against Skeeters starter Michael Nix. The teams went scoreless through an inning and a half, but that was when puddles began to form on the infield dirt, bringing the tarp back out. After 30 more minutes, the scoreless game was officially postponed, with all of the stats accumulated in the game to that point being erased.

With Somerset winning on Saturday night, the Ducks now sit 1 ½ games back of first place. However, if the Patriots lose on Sunday and the Ducks sweep a twinbill from Sugar Land, Long Island and Somerset will be in a tie for first place. John Brownell gets the start in game one in hopes of starting Fan Appreciation Day off on a good note. The ace comes in at 11-5 with a 3.24 ERA in 24 starts. In 164 innings, Brownell has allowed 65 runs (59 earned) on 139 hits while walking 43 and striking 134. Opponents are hitting .226 against the Omaha resident, who has thrown two straight complete games (three on the season). In his last two starts (versus Bridgeport and at Camden), Brownell is 1-1 and has allowed five runs on 12 hits in 17 innings while walking four and striking out 15. On August 7, Brownell earned the win in a 2-1 Ducks victory in Sugar Land, giving up one run on three hits in seven innings.

The Skeeters send Josh Geer to the bump in Sunday’s first game. The right-hander is currently 6-7 with a 4.53 ERA through 21 starts this season. He has given up 60 runs (59 earned) on 157 hits in 117 and one-third innings with 26 walks and 70 strikeouts. Opposing batters are hitting .322 against Geer, whose last start came on September 8 in Bridgeport. The Skeeters won 5-2 with Geer getting the win with six innings of two-run ball

In game two, Ian Marshall will get the start for the Flock. Through 24 starts, the right-hander is 7-7 with a 4.20 ERA. He has surrendered 72 runs (63 earned) on 132 hits in 135 frames, while walking 63 and striking out 86. His previous outing came a week ago at home against the Blue Crabs, a 16-14 Ducks win. Marshall lasted four innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits. He walked three and struck out two.

Sugar Land will hand the ball to Kelvin Villa who is 0-2. Villa has made six appearances (five starts) since joining the Skeeters in mid-August and has thrown 26 innings for an ERA of 3.81. In those frames, the lefty has allowed 14 runs (11 earned) on 27 hits in 26 innings. He has walked 10 and struck out 20. Villa was the loser on September 6 at home against Somerset. The 29-year-old surrendered four runs (three earned) in four frames.
