Game 129: Ducks at Riversharks

Field

On a hot, humid night in New Jersey, the Ducks dropped their series opener with the Camden Riversharks in a 3-0 final. For just the sixth time this season, Long Island was shut out, as Camden starter and former Duck Bill Murphy went the distance. The southpaw tossed a complete game and stymied the Flock for a full nine innings. John Brownell also threw a complete game, but came out on the wrong end of the decision in a tough loss. However, the Patriots and Bluefish also lost on Tuesday night, keeping the Ducks two games back of first place and the ‘Fish in third, still five games out.

From the start, Murphy was in control of the ballgame. Camden’s offense gave Murphy all the run support he needed in the first two innings of the ballgame. Mat Gamel’s RBI single to right off John Brownell in the first had the ‘Sharks in front 1-0. A pair of runs would cross in the second, on Brandon Chaves’ RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Michael Rockett. Murphy took it from there. Long Island’s best chances to score came in the second and fourth inning. In the second, Randy Ruiz reached third after starting the inning with a leadoff double in the left-centerfield gap. However, Cody Puckett grounded out to third to end the inning. In the fourth, Dan Lyons also led off the frame with a double and reached third with two outs. Again Murphy got Puckett, this time on a fly ball to center. Long Island did not have another runner reach third in the loss. Brownell also settled in and did not allow another run in the start, but Murphy was the hurler with a lead.

Brownell fell to 11-5 with the loss. But, with eight strikeouts, the righty set a new career-high in K’s with 134 on the season. That leads the Atlantic League. Brownell allowed three runs on six hits while walking two in eight innings. It was his third complete game of the season, and second in his last two starts. Murphy, now 7-14, moved himself into second place in strikeouts among the league leaders. The lefty struck out six Ducks, giving him 116 on the year. Ruiz led the Long Island offense with two hits including a double.

Losers of two straight, the Ducks now hand the ball to Bobby Blevins in the middle game of three in Camden. The right-hander will face Camden for the first time in 2015, entering the contest at 3-4 with a 4.26 ERA in 11 starts. Blevins has allowed 40 runs (33 earned) on 81 hits in 69 and two-thirds innings. He has struck out 53 and walked just seven batters all year. The New York native pitched very well last time out, when the Ducks defeated the Blue Crabs 10-4 on August 29 in Southern Maryland. Blevins allowed three runs on eight hits in eight innings. He did not issue a walk and struck out three. The starter has not allowed more than two walks in an outing all season.

Chris Widger will send Sean Gleason to the hill. Also a righty, Gleason comes in at 6-13 with an ERA of 5.01 through 29 appearances (23 starts). He has allowed 90 runs (76 earned) on 175 hits in 136 and one-third innings while walking 45 and striking out 82. Opponents are hitting .310 against the California native. After pitching out of the bullpen from August 21 to September 2 (six innings in six appearances), Gleason made a start on September 4 in Lancaster, as the Riversharks fell 2-0 to the Barnstormers. Gleason was saddled with the loss, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work. He walked one and struck out four.
