Game 87: Ducks at Bluefish

Field

After dropping their series opener in Bridgeport by two runs on Friday, Long Island fell by one run in a 3-2 final on Saturday night. Each team finished with eight hits, but the Flock were unable to complete a late comeback in the ninth inning. With the win, the Bluefish pulled even with the Ducks in the 2015 Ferry Cup Series at eight games apiece. The Ducks are now 7-9 in the second half of play and are five games back of the first-place ‘Fish.

The Bluefish put up a run in the first inning against starter John Brownell on a RBI single from John Alonso that scored Welington Dotel. Dotel caused the Ducks trouble all game long, finishing with three singles, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. He would later single in the third and score again, this time on a sacrifice fly from Jobduan Morales. In the fourth, the Ducks put up their first run on a Dan Lyons sacrifice fly. It was Lyons’ 41st RBI of the season. He is 15 shy of tying his career-high as a Duck. The run came off of starter Robert Carson, who made just his second start of the season on Saturday night. The lefty pitched three and two-thirds innings, allowing the one run on six hits. However, he did not issue a walk and eight of the 11 outs he put together were strikeouts (all swinging). After a scoreless fifth inning, Bridgeport extended the lead to 3-1 on an Andres Rodriguez’s solo homer in the sixth. Once Carson was pulled, Darren Byrd, Sam Gervacio, Eric Niesen, and Steven Ames held the Ducks to one hit over the next four and one-third frames. Trailing 3-1 in the ninth, the Ducks were down to their final out when catcher Dan Coury stepped to the plate. Coury sent closer Patrick Mincey’s first-pitch fastball out of the ballpark to deep left field, his first homer as a Duck. Mike Blanke, who had the night off, was then called on to pinch hit, but struck out swinging to end the game.

Coury and Cody Puckett each finished with a pair of hits and a run scored for the Ducks. Brownell took the loss to fall to 7-3 on the year. He surrendered three runs (two earned) on eight hits while walking three and striking out eight in seven strong innings. His ERA is now 3.06. Byrd earned the win for the Bluefish after replacing Carson. He pitched one and one-third innings of hitless baseball. Patrick Crider also pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning for the Ducks.

The Ducks will try and salvage a win in the three-game series and avoid the sweep with Bobby Blevins on the hill. Blevins 1-2 with a 6.00 ERA and has pitched in five games with four starts since rejoining the Ducks in late June. He has allowed 18 runs (16 earned) on 31 hits in 24 innings while walking four and striking out 21. The righty last started on July 21 at Bethpage Ballpark against the York Revolution, taking loss in a 5-1 Revs win. The 30-year-old allowed five runs on eight hits in six innings.

Bridgeport looks for a series sweep with Kameron Loe taking the ball. The Major League veteran is in his first year with Bridgeport and is currently 3-2 with a 4.41 ERA in six starts. He has given up 21 runs (18 earned) on 36 hits in 36 and two-thirds innings with five walks and 31 strikeouts. The 6-foot-8 hurler last pitched on July 21 in Southern Maryland, throwing eight innings and allowing two runs on five hits for his third win. Loe has won in his last three outings, allowing just two runs in 22 frames across that span.
