Game 86: Ducks at Bluefish

Swing

Although they led once in the game, the Long Island Ducks dropped their series opener against the Bridgeport Bluefish on Friday night in a 5-3 final. Bridgeport also picked up a game in the 2015 Ferry Cup Series, which the Ducks currently lead eight games to seven.

The Bluefish put up their first run in the first inning. Josh Prince led things off with a single, stole second base, and advanced to third on a Bryant Nelson sacrifice bunt. Ducks starter Darin Downs then threw a wild pitch that scored Prince from third. Bluefish starter D.J. Mitchell set the Ducks down in order the first time through the lineup, but in the fourth the Long Island offense woke up. The Ducks plated two runs on a throwing error from Nelson at second base and a RBI double from Jon Griffin. With a 2-1 lead, the Ducks went scoreless in the fifth but let up the lead in the sixth. Downs was pulled from the game with two outs in the frame, having already allowed a game-tying RBI single to Welington Dotel. Reliever Bruce Kern was called on to replace Downs, as he had in the starter’s two previous outings as a Duck. Kern walked Jobduan Morales, and then allowed a two-run single up the middle to Andres Rodriguez on a 0-2 pitch. Bridgeport went ahead 4-2 and did not look back. They added another insurance run in the seventh, courtesy of Dotel once again with a RBI single. The Ducks put up one run in the ninth on a run-scoring double play ball off the bat of Griffin, but could not finish the job.

Mitchell went eight innings for the ‘Fish, picking up the win to improve to 5-7. He allowed two runs on five hits without a walk and six strikeouts. His ERA is now 2.90. Downs suffered the loss for the Flock, falling to 0-2 in three starts since joining the team. The lefty allowed four runs in five hits through five and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts. Cody Puckett scored two of Long Island’s three runs. Bryan Sabatella also scored his league-leading 59th run of the season.

The Ducks try and pick up a win in the middle game of the series with ace John Brownell on the mound. Brownell comes into the game at 7-2 with a 3.09 ERA through 15 starts. He has allowed 39 runs (35 earned) in 101 and two-thirds innings on 83 hits while walking 24 and striking out 79. Batters are hitting 218 against the righty. Brownell last pitched on July 20 at home against the York Revolution. The Ducks won the game 5-4, but Brownell took a no decision, allowing four runs on five hits in six innings.

The Bluefish try to secure a win in the series with Robert Carson getting the ball in the middle contest. The first-year Bluefish is 1-0 with a 2.93 ERA. He has pitched in 12 games and has one start. The former New York Met has allowed eight runs (five earned) on 14 hits through 15 and one-third innings. He has walked six and struck out 18. The southpaw last pitched on July 23, allowing one hit in one scoreless inning against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, as part of a 7-0 Bridgeport win. Carson saw action with the Mets in the big leagues in 2012 and 2013.
