Local Products Take the Mound
After a rainy day on Tuesday that delayed the start of workouts, the sunshine and warm temperatures are back at Bethpage Ballpark for the third day of Spring Training! It’s going to be a busy one in Central Islip, as the team will be working on infield and outfield practice, going over bunt plays, taking batting practice and having approximately five pitchers throw live to hitters. With such nice weather and less than 10 days now until the season begins, it’s important for everyone to get their necessary work in and continue to build chemistry.
Day 2 of Spring Training saw a round of batting practice for the team as well as two pitchers throwing live to hitters. Although only two guys took the mound, compared to four on Monday and five today, it was an important session to watch. Bruce Kern and Matt Soren, two Long Island natives who were non-roster Spring Training invitees, had the chance to make their first impressions on the coaching staff. In speaking to Pitching Coach Marty Janzen afterwards, the results seemed positive.
“I think both guys threw well,” he stated. “Soren has a live fastball, and Kern moved his really well, especially with the two-seamer. I think Kern also got some nice spin on the curveball and threw his changeup for strikes. He almost looks like he’s ready to go.”
We took some video of several players during batting practice, as well as some of Kern and Soren on the mound. You can check it out here:
Finally, here are some of the best photos from the second day of Spring Training workouts at Bethpage Ballpark:
