Game 84: Ducks at Riversharks

The Long Island Ducks continue their season-high 10 game road trip tonight when they take on the Camden Riversharks in the second game of a three-game series at Campbell’s Field. In the process, the Flock will look to break a franchise-high 12-game losing streak, dating back to Tuesday, July 8 against the Sugar Land Skeeters. Specifically, the Ducks have dropped now seven-straight since the All-Star Break. After dropping all six games of the latest homestand at Bethpage Ballpark, the Flock migrated south on I-95 an hour after Wednesday’s ballgame to Camden, N.J. for a quick turnaround. Unfortunately for Long Island, despite the change of scenery, the struggles continued.

It was another matchup that, on paper, favored the Ducks. With an 11:05 a.m. first pitch, Bobby Blevins took the hill for Long Island against Greg Miller for the Riversharks. For the fourth consecutive game, however, the Ducks fell behind early; this time on a RBI single from Jose Julio-Ruiz in the bottom of the first. From that point on, Blevins was outstanding, allowing just two runs over seven and two-thirds innings for his fourth consecutive quality start. In the process, Long Island’s bats would come alive enough to put the Flock in front. A sac fly in the third tied the game before Adam Bailey gave the Flock the lead with a solo home run in the top of the sixth. A RBI single from Brendan Harris then extended the lead to 3-1 in the seventh. The Ducks carried that lead into the bottom of the eighth inning, at which point the Camden bats came alive.

Blevins remained in the ballgame heading to the eighth, but allowed two hits, including a RBI single from Brian Van Kirk, to trim the deficit to one. Blevins was then removed for Brett Lorin, who got the final out of the inning before Jon Meloan came on in the ninth for the save opportunity. A walk and two singles would load the bases before Paddy Matera blooped a base hit to shallow right to tie the game. Meloan exited in favor of southpaw Eric Niesen, who would allow game-winning base hit to Jose Morales to hand the Flock a crushing 4-3 defeat.

Tonight Long Island will send Jared Lansford to the mound for his 15th start of the year. The third-year Duck enters 4-3 on the season with a team-best 3.21 earned run average. Lansford has been great lately, and has not allowed more than two runs in a start since June 27 at York. Over that span, the righty is 1-0 and has allowed just six runs over 28 innings pitched (1.93 ERA). In Lansford’s lone start against the Riversharks, he allowed three runs over three and two-thirds innings on May 17.

Lansford will work against Camden righty Pedro Liriano tonight, who makes his 16th appearance (11th start) of the year. The first-year Rivershark is 0-6 this season season with a 5.66 ERA. Liriano has lost four of his last five starts, including a July 4th appearance against the Flock. His best start of the year coincidentally came against the Ducks on June 19th at Campbell’s Field. In that start, the three-year Atlantic League veteran allowed one run on four hits scattered over seven innings en route to a no-decision.
