Game 39: Ducks at Blue Crabs
The Long Island Ducks completed a successful seven-game homestand last night at Bethpage Ballpark. After dropping the first series of the homestand to the Somerset Patriots two games to one, the Flock responded by taking three-of-four from the Lancaster Barnstormers. Now, the Ducks have migrated south to Waldorf, Md. for five games in four days against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, beginning tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Regency Furniture Stadium. Long Island is 6-0 against the Blue Crabs this season, including taking both games at Southern Maryland earlier this year.
Last night, Lancaster earned its first road win in its last 10 games thanks to a stellar performance from starting pitcher Mark Rogers and first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard. Rogers earned his second win of the year after allowing one run on six hits, one walk and five strikeouts over six innings of work. At the plate, Kjeldgaard drove in all four runs for Lancaster. An RBI single in the first, followed by a three-run homer in the third, provided the damage for the ‘Stormers.

Long Island now sets its eyes on a series with the Blue Crabs which features five games in four days. Jared Lansford toes the rubber for the Flock tonight against Southern Maryland starter Gabriel Hernandez. Lansford enter with a 1-1 record and a 4.50 ERA in five starts so far this year. The righty earned his lone win of the year against Southern Maryland on May 22 at Bethpage Ballpark after allowing two unearned runs over five innings. His counterpart tonight, Hernandez, is 0-2 this year with a 5.83 ERA in seven appearances (five starts). Arguably, his best start came against Long Island on May 21. That night, Hernandez earned a no-decision after allowing one run on seven hits scattered over six innings.
Here are tonight’s game notes:
Ducks vs. Blue Crabs: Tonight marks the seventh meeting of the season between the Ducks and Blue Crabs and the third of 10 games between the two in Southern Maryland. Long Island currently leads the season series six games to none. Long Island and Southern Maryland have played 123 games against each other all-time, with the Blue Crabs holding a 67-56 series lead and a 34-22 advantage at Regency Furniture Stadium.
On-Base Machines: Cody Puckett has now reached base in 28 consecutive games after collecting a walk in the first inning Thursday. That is the longest on-base streak in the Atlantic League this season, three more than teammate Lew Ford’s 25-game streak from May 3 to 30. The second baseman has at least one hit in 23 of the 28 games during the streak. Joash Brodin saw his 25-game on-base streak end last night against the Barnstormers.
Starting Things Right: Ducks starting pitchers excelled throughout the four-game series against the Lancaster Barnstormers earlier this week. John Brownell and Shaun Garceau both tossed complete games – the third and fourth of the year for Long Island, respectively – while Bobby Blevins tossed a quality start Tuesday and Fernando Hernandez contributed six strong innings Thursday. In the series, Ducks starters were 3-1 with a 2.61 ERA, 25 hits, seven walks and 31 strikeouts in 31 innings.
Fords Fury: With two hits on Thursday, Ford picked up his team-leading 17th multi-hit game of the season, two more than Cody Puckett. Ford currently leads the league in batting average (.389), RBI (39) and hits (58), while tied for third in the league in home runs (7).
Silencing the Crabs: Long Island is 6-0 against the Blue Crabs, including 2-0 at Regency Furniture Stadium. The Flock have outscored the Southern Maryland by an aggregate of 35-10 in their six games, the largest aggregate differential for the Ducks against any other Atlantic League team this year.
