Game 35: Ducks vs. Barnstormers

IMG_4055
After an exciting weekend series with the Somerset Patriots, the Long Island Ducks welcome the Lancaster Barnstormers to Bethpage Ballpark Monday for the opener of a four-game series. It was a weekend to remember in Central Islip, as the Ducks not only welcomed the 6 millionth fan in franchise history through the ballpark turnstiles but also had a Pyrotecnico Fireworks Extravaganza and a special appearance from Nick Jr. TV star Peppa Pig. In fact, Saturday’s attendance of 6,613 was a season-high at the Duck Pond. Tonight, the fun continues with another Pyrotecnico Fireworks Extravaganza following the game, presented by Bank of America.

Following a split of the first two games during the weekend series, the Ducks were unable to claim the rubber game despite battling to the end. Yesterday, Long Island’s resiliency was on full display with not one, but two late-inning rallies to send the game to extra innings. Somerset carried a four-run lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, but a Randy Ruiz solo home run and three two-out runs, highlighted by a two-run single from Cody Puckett, tied the game at four.

The Patriots regained the lead during next half inning, but a pinch-hit, bases loaded walk by Sergio Miranda once again tied the ballgame. The game remained knotted at five until the top of the 12th inning when a Luis Montanez base hit provided Somerset with the winning run.

Tonight, John Brownell makes his eighth start of the year for Long Island. The right-hander is 3-3 with a 4.81 ERA, 16 walks and 34 strikeouts in 43 innings this season. After a slow start, Brownell has pitched well as of late, winning his last two starts. Included in those two starts were seven shutout innings against the Sugar Land Skeeters on May 25 and six innings of three-run ball in a 19-3 victory on Wednesday in Lancaster. He will oppose Barnstormers southpaw Clayton Tanner who is 2-2 with a 6.42 ERA this year, and both wins have come against the Ducks. In two starts against Long Island, Tanner has a 1.64 ERA, two walks and six strikeouts over 11 innings.

Here are tonight’s game notes:

Ducks vs. Barnstormers: Tonight marks the 10th meeting of the season between the Ducks and Barnstormers and the fourth of 10 games between the two on Long Island. The Barnstormers currently lead the series 6-3. Long Island and Lancaster have played 183 games against each other all-time, with the Ducks holding a 96-87 series lead and a 45-42 advantage at the Duck Pond.

On-Base Machines: Cody Puckett has now reached base in 24 consecutive games after collecting three hits on Sunday. That’s the second-longest on-base streak in the Atlantic League this season behind Lew Ford’s 25-game streak. He has at least one hit in 21 of those 24 games. Joash Brodin has reached base in 22 straight games after picking up a hit and a walks on Sunday. That ranks as the third-longest streak in the league this season.

Randy Goes Yard: Randy Ruiz’s solo home run on Sunday was his third of the season. His first two came on Wednesday in a 19-3 win at Lancaster, marking the first time a Duck had a multi-homer game in 2014. Ruiz has now hit safely in nine of the 12 games he has played with the Flock and has reached base safely in 11 of the 12 games. The Ducks have now hit 27 homers as a team this year.

Off to the Races: Fehlandt Lentini picked up another stolen base on Sunday, his 16th of the season. That ties him with York’s Sean Smith for the most in the Atlantic League this season. He has successfully stolen all 16 of his attempts as well. As a Barnstormer in 2012, he set a franchise record by stealing each of his first 17 attempts and finished that season with 32 stolen bases.

What Can Brown-ell Do For You?: Tonight’s starter, John Brownell, has won each of his last two starts. In the two wins, the right-hander has a 2.08 ERA, allowing just three runs in 13 innings of work. Last year’s Championship Series MVP is currently tied with teammate Bobby Blevins for the Atlantic League lead in strikeouts with 34 and ranks fourth in innings pitched with 43.
