Take Two – Games 4/5: Ducks at Blue Crabs

photo (10)
Well, after an absolute deluge of rain here in Southern Maryland over the last two days, the scene at Regency Furniture Stadium is much drier and we can actually see a baseball diamond for the first time since arriving on Tuesday. The Ducks and Blue Crabs had the first two games of this three-game set rained out, setting up a doubleheader today that is scheduled to begin at 10:35 a.m. One of the two postponements will be made up at a later date.

So, as long as the weather cooperates, Long Island and Southern Maryland will play two seven-inning games today with a 30 minute break in between. AccuWeather.com shows mostly cloudy conditions for the day, with the only true potential for rain/thunderstorms coming at 1:00 when the chance for precipitation rises to 51%. For information about the starting pitchers today, please check out yesterday’s blog post below.

Here are some key notes for today’s twinbill:

Head-to-Head: Today marks the first two meetings of the season between the Ducks and Blue Crabs and the first two of 10 meetings at Regency Furniture Stadium in 2014. Long Island and Southern Maryland have played 117 games against each other all-time, with the Blue Crabs holding a 67-50 advantage in the series and a 34-20 lead in Waldorf, Maryland. The Ducks won the 2013 season series between the two teams by an 11-9 margin.

Division Swap: For the first time since the Blue Crabs came into the Atlantic League in 2008, the Ducks and Blue Crabs are no longer division rivals. Southern Maryland swapped divisions this offseason, moving from the Liberty to the Freedom Division. In a corresponding move, the Somerset Patriots moved to the Liberty Division.

Oh What a Relief They Are: The Ducks bullpen has been outstanding over the first three games of the season. Long Island relievers have combined to allow just one run over 17.1 innings, good for a 0.52 ERA. In that span, the relievers have also allowed just 14 hits and six walks while striking out eight. As for the starters, they have combined to walk just one batter while striking out 13 over 14 and one-third innings thus far.

Approaching Milestones: Lew Ford is one plate appearance away from 4,000, four home runs away from 100 and 11 RBI away from 500 in his minor league career… Joash Brodin is four RBI from reaching 300 in his professional career…Brian Peacock is four hits away from 400 in his professional career…Dan Lyons is two doubles away from 100 in his professional career.

Double Dose: Today marks the first doubleheader of the season for the Ducks. In 2013, Long Island went 6-6 in twinbills, including 1-3 in single admission doubleheaders with two seven inning games. The Ducks and Blue Crabs played three doubleheaders in 2013, with the Ducks going 4-2 in those games.

On the Air: Both games of today’s doubleheader will be broadcast on the Long Island Ducks official YouTube channel. Live streaming audio will be available by CLICKING HERE. The North Shore LIJ/Southside Hospital pre-game show is slated to begin at 10:20 a.m., with first pitch following at 10:35. Michael Polak will have the play-by-play.
