The Season is Upon Us

Spring training is officially over. The Ducks have wrapped up their workouts at Bethpage Ballpark, and are ready to begin the 2014 season. While six Atlantic League teams will get their first game of the year in tonight, the Ducks and Somerset Patriots will wait a day for their 2013 Atlantic League Championship Series rematch. Both teams will kick things off on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. from TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater, NJ.

Teams needed to have their final Opening Day roster into the Atlantic League by noon on Thursday, and before doing so, the Ducks announced a pair of transactions. Brad Holt, an invitee to spring training, has performed well enough to earn a contract from the Ducks. He was signed and activated today and will join Long Island’s bullpen. In addition, right-handed pitcher Jared Lansford was the first Duck to suffer an injury this year. He is dealing with a lat strain, which affects the muscle in the back/side, and will be out 10-14 days. Therefore, Long Island placed him on the inactive list. Though they are able to carry up to 27 players until June 1, the Ducks will begin the year with 25 active players.

Manager Kevin Baez announced his starting lineup for Opening Night against the Patriots following today’s workout. Here is how the Ducks starting nine will look on Friday night:

#22 Joash Brodin – 1B
#5   Chris McClendon – 3B
#24 Fehlandt Lentini – RF
#20 Lew Ford – CF
#13 Adam Bailey – RF
#33 Ryan Strieby – DH
#2   Cody Puckett – 2B
#27 Keith Castillo – C
#12 Dan Lyons – SS

#7   John Brownell – RHP

Baez said that the decision to go with Castillo over Peacock on Opening Night is that the Ducks will be facing right-hander Erik Arnesen, and Castillo is a switch-hitter. Expect to see Peacock in on Saturday night with a lefty on the mound. In addition, Bailey will move from right field to left field to begin the season after playing right field almost all of last year. According to Baez, Lentini feels more comfortable playing in right, and Bailey has no issues being in left.

As for the starting rotation, the Ducks currently have four starters guaranteed with spots. These four are, in order, righty John Brownell, righty Shaun Garceau, righty Bobby Blevins and lefty Matt Way. Jared Lansford was originally going to occupy the fifth spot, but due to injury, Baez will have to temporarily fill that role. Here are the pitching matchups for the opening series of the year with 2013 Atlantic League regular season stats included:

Friday: RHP John Brownell (9-10, 3.90 ERA) vs. RHP Erik Arnesen (13-4, 3.18 ERA)
Saturday: RHP Shaun Garceau (2-1, 1.17 ERA) vs. LHP Matt Maloney (1-1, 3.54 ERA)
Sunday: RHP Bobby Blevins (1-1, 4.84 ERA) vs. LHP Zach Kroenke (5-16, 4.51 ERA)

After today’s workout, we caught up with Baez and designated hitter/first baseman Ryan Strieby to discuss the start of the 2014 season and where the team is at heading into Opening Night:

We will be posting live from Bridgewater, New Jersey tomorrow with both teams’ starting lineups, news and notes prior to the game and a live link to follow along with the radio broadcast, as the Ducks will be making their debut on 103.9-FM LI News Radio.
