Spring Training Game 3: Ducks vs. Black Sox
Good Morning Ducks fans! We have officially reached the week in which the 2014 regular season will begin around the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Six of the eight teams will begin the season on Thursday night, and the Ducks and Somerset Patriots will kick things off on Friday. Here are the first regular season series matchups on Thursday Night:
Camden Riversharks vs. York Revolution – 6:30 p.m. – Santander Stadium
Bridgeport Bluefish vs. Southern Maryland Blue Crabs – 7:05 p.m. – Regency Furniture Stadium
Lancaster Barnstormers vs. Sugar Land Skeeters – 8:05 p.m. EDT – Constellation Field
Before the season begins though, the Ducks still have two spring training games to go. The first of those two is today against the semi-pro Long Island Black Sox. The two teams will take the field at Bethpage Ballpark at 1:05 p.m., and gates will open at 1:00. Admission to the ballpark is free for all Ducks season ticket holders, and a $5 donation to the QuackerJack Foundation will apply to the general public.
Manager Kevin Baez has his lineup and pitching schedule for today posted. Here is the starting lineup:
#22 Joash Brodin – 1B
#15 Jon Myers – 3B
#24 Fehlandt Lentini – RF
#20 Lew Ford – CF
#13 Adam Bailey – LF
#33 Ryan Strieby – DH
#2 Cody Puckett – 2B
#23 Brian Peacock – C
#30 Sergio Miranda – SS
#28 Shaun Garceau – RHP
As for the pitching schedule, it looks like this:
Shaun Garceau (RHP) – 3 innings
Matt Way (LHP) – 2
Josh Lansford (RHP) – 1
Brad Holt (RHP) – 1
Glenn Gibson (LHP) – 1
Leo Rosales (RHP) – 1
Eric Niesen (LHP) – 1
Brett Lorin (RHP) – 1
As you can tell, that accounts for 11 innings of play based on the pitching schedule. Baez has said that the teams will play 11 innings today so that all the pitchers the Ducks need to throw will have a chance to do so in a live game. That is not an uncommon occurrence for exhibition games.
We will be updating this post throughout the game with scoring updates and other information about the game. Stay tuned to “Quack of the Bat” for more from another sun-filled day at the Duck Pond!

UPDATE (1:09): We are underway from Bethpage Ballpark! Scoreless first inning for Shaun Garceau. He allowed a leadoff double on a pop fly that was lost in the sun in left but nothing further. Brian Peacock made a nice throw to third to catch Anthony Luciano stealing for the final out.
UPDATE (1:17): Ducks were also held scoreless in the first. Joash Brodin led off with a single but was caught stealing. It went 1-3-6 on the putout.
UPDATE (1:33): The Ducks got on the scoreboard on a pair of doubles by Adam Bailey and Cody Puckett in the second.
UPDATE (1:42): Tough third inning for Garceau as the Black Sox plate five runs. Four straight hits opened the frame. Chris DeGennaro hit a two-run homer to cap the scoring.
UPDATE (1:55): A three-run bottom half of the third for the Ducks brings them back within one at 5-4. Lentini had a two-run double to right, and Brodin scored on a throwing error by Luciano. Matt Way has now replaced Garceau on the mound. Garceau’s final line: 3.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 45 pitches, 33 strikes.
UPDATE (2:13): The Black Sox hit their second home run of the day, as Luciano hits a solo shot to left-center leading off the fifth. 6-4 Black Sox.
UPDATE (2:18): Josh Lansford is in for Matt Way to begin the sixth. Way allowed a run on three hits with one strikeout and no walks in two innings. Keith Castillo has also taken over at catcher.
UPDATE (2:37): Cody Puckett’s RBI single to center in the sixth makes it 6-5. Several more changes for the Ducks in the field. Chris McClendon is now in at third, and Dan Lyons is in at short. Brodin moves to left, Lentini to center and Myers to right. Brad Holt is now pitching after Josh Lansford yielded a hit but struck out the side in the sixth.
UPDATE (2:44): Holt struck out the side in the seventh as well. Wilfin De LaRosa has taken over for Ron Delgado on the mound in the seventh.
UPDATE (2:56): Lentini ties the game with a soft liner into right that plates Brodin, who now has three hits. 6-6 as we go to the eighth, and Glenn Gibson is now pitching for the Flock.
UPDATE (3:20): Glenn Gibson and Leo Rosales toss a scoreless inning apiece. Still tied at six as we head to the bottom of the ninth.
UPDATE (3:26): Nine innings have been completed, and we remain knotted at six. Onto the 10th inning we go, as was originally scheduled regardless of score, and Eric Niesen is in to pitch. Anthony Armenio has also taken over at catcher.
UPDATE (3:33): Ducks relievers have struck out 12 of the last 16 hitters they have faced, allowing just one single in those five innings. Overall, Ducks pitching has 16 strikeouts on the day through 10 innings.
UPDATE (3:38): Anthony Armenio breaks the tie in the bottom of the 10th with a solo blast over the right field wall! 7-6 Flock!
UPDATE (3:44): Ryan Strieby’s RBI grounder to short increases the lead to 8-6. The Ducks have technically won this game, but the teams will play into the 11th inning to give everyone their needed work. Brett Lorin now pitching for the Flock.
UPDATE (3:54): Scoreless inning for @TheBuildingBL in the 11th with two more strikeouts. That’s now 14 of the last 20 batters struck out by the Ducks!
UPDATE (4:00): This ballgame is over. The Ducks pick up their first win of spring training, 8-6 over the Long Island Black Sox. More info to come shortly.
