Monday News and Notes at the Duck Pond
One full week of the Major League Baseball season has already been completed, which means it’s another week closer to the start of the Long Island Ducks 15th Anniversary Season. We are officially less than three weeks away, 18 days to be exact, from the Ducks opening the 2014 season in Bridgewater, New Jersey against the Somerset Patriots. A lot has taken place over the course of the past few weeks to get us to this point. Let’s recap some of the latest news stories in case you missed them:
–The preliminary 2014 Promotional Schedule was announced
–Individual tickets for all Ducks home games went on sale
–Two brand new Season Ticket Holder benefits were added
-Two more players from the back-to-back championship teams signed for 2014: Matt Way & Joash Brodin
-Five newcomers joined the Flock last week: Steve Garrison, Cody Puckett, Saul Rivera, Brian Peacock and Brett Lorin
–The Ducks and Long Island Cares teamed up once again to host food drives throughout the season at Bethpage Ballpark
-A Rod was signed by the Ducks at a press conference
Okay, that last one might have just been a clever joke, but it has still been a busy past few weeks. That takes us to today where another big announcement came from Central Islip. The Ducks revealed that Fan Fest, which made its debut prior to the 2013 season, will return on Saturday, April 19 at 10:30 a.m. The day will be full of a variety of exciting activities for Ducks fans of any age to enjoy. There’s something fun for everyone, whether you are a Season Ticket Holder, Kids Club member or just want to enjoy an afternoon at the ballpark.
Among all the entertainment taking place, fans will have the chance to watch the team take batting practice and enjoy a spring training game between the Ducks and Bridgeport Bluefish. The entire Ducks team will be introduced to fans at approximately 12:45 with first pitch slated for 1:05. While the whole exhibition schedule has yet to be announced, this date is one that should absolutely be circled on your calendar.
Here are some other news and notes from today:
-Bethpage Ballpark has seen a couple of improvements this offseason! The most notable is brand new netting installed behind home plate. Fans will enjoy improved sightlines with this netting, as it only requires six vertical cables for support compared to 15 for the previous netting. In addition, brand new backstop padding was installed to freshen up the look of the ballpark. The view from sections 100-104 and 201-204 has never been better! Here’s a tweet president and general manager Michael Pfaff posted about the improvement:

-Happy 27th Birthday to former Ducks catcher Ralph Henriquez! The 2013 Atlantic League champion spent all of last season with the Flock before signing a contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization during the offseason. He has begun the season with their Double-A affiliate in Altoona (Pa.). We will keep you updated on Ralph and all the other Ducks alumni throughout the year.
-QuackerJack was out and about all weekend long to help celebrate Opening Day for several little leagues around Long Island. Among those visited were the Jericho Athletic Association, the Half Hollow Hills Little League and the Connetquot Youth Association. Shortstop and 2012 Atlantic League Championship Series MVP Dan Lyons stopped by Plainview Little League’s Opening Day ceremonies as well. QJ also visited the St. Charles Hospital Pediatric Health Fair on Saturday.
Throughout the rest of April, Long Island’s favorite mascot is scheduled to be at Opening Day for the following little leagues:
-Blue Point Little League
-West Islip Little League
-St. Hugh-St. Elizabeth Baseball
Stay tuned for more information and news throughout the week. The Ducks roster currently sits at 23, so there will more than likely be some more player signings to break down. In addition, the team’s spring training schedule and winners of the Anthem Idol contest held this past Saturday will also be announced soon. Baseball is right around the corner!
